We could have another poll question: Would you pick up a $20US bill from the floor in a store and pocket it or give it to the store so they might return it to the owner?

I probably wouldn't trust the store to return it. If no customer was standing near that might have dropped it, I would keep it. If someone was near, I would probably ask them if it's theirs. They may lie if it isn't and take it, but my conscious would be clear.

Concerning picking up pennies, No. If instead it was a washer or a bolt in good condition, I would pick it up as the value is much more than a penny. What can you buy for one US penny? Or two, or 5? Sure, they accumulate if you have enough.

In the last few years, US pennies are made of pot metal and copper plated, not solid copper. The older pennies, on the other hand, are solid copper. They have more than the one cent face value for the metal itself. Of course melting them down and selling them as bulk copper may be illegal.

It's a good idea to always kick change, see if it's glued, or has gum, or other yucky stuff attached. Maybe just to see if it's real.

They were using zinc back in 1982. It's been quite a few years since pennies were pure copper.

I saw on TV early '06 that pennies now cost 10 cents for every 7 made. But I cant see any way to get rid of them in the US due to one factor of the .99 stores. And most marketing still believes that $10.00 will sell nowhere near as much as $9.99.
Also if you ask the price of gas you almost always get the wrong price - $2.509 becomes just $2.50 when actually it's much closer to $2.51. So the "9" factor does appear to have an effect.

I like the penny and hope that they don't do away with it.

I seem the recall just reading that scrap value of the coin has just passed face value.

I have seen the fake folded money before too, but it was always some Jesus loves you advertisement.

A freind of mine, that just died, was a mason. He would braze a stem onto the back of a dollar coin and embed it into every concrete project that he did. He would put it like on the corner of the first stair of the front porch or where it would show right next to a door way or some other clever spot.

I high scool, someone (guess who) glued a quarter to the floor in an english class. It was there for a couple of days and ther was obvious damage to the VCT tile around it from attempts to get it up. Well being the clever idiot that glued it down I decided it was time to get it up. I had a buddy sit in his desk/chair and I slid him about four feet at ramming spped to break it loose. The quarter shot up and hit a girl right on the bridge of her nose and left a nice cut and bruise. (I never did get to go out with her after tht)
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

Yes. You never know when some wacky candid camera reality show is going to be trolling for material
    If in doubt, Google it.

At the last place I worked, some nefarious employee discovered that certain foreign coins (worth a penny or so) were the exact size and weight need to fool a vending machine into thinking it was a quarter. A few people started getting these coins back as change and the company threatened to remove the machines altogether if it continued. I'm not sure, but I think they actually caught the person doing it. For one reason or another, the bogus coin ruse stopped.

    I work at a college.
Sidewalk coinage can also be great entertainment.
I got stuck for 3 weeks, filling in for a hospitalized coworker.
I was stuck sitting at the front desk, facing a wide, front window, and an outside sidewalk.
    ....BORING BORING BORING!!!!!

So I decided to fight the boredom, by epoxying a quarter to the sidewalk out front.

It worked great! It lasted for about 10 days till someone actually chiseled the
quarter out...taking a bit of concrete with it.

    Of course.

I've tried waiting for it to jump into my pocket, but I got tired of waiting
