Is there a way of getting the playstation 2 to play vcd's?

I heard there is a multi region dvd boot disk available. Does anyone know if this supports vcd playback?

    Thanks fo any info,

You might be able to if you had the mod chip and use the multi region disc.

There is currently no way to play vcds on the PS2. The multiregion dvd boot disk is just that, a disk used to boot dvds from all regions. It has nothing to do with vcds.

  4. Rich,

Hi. I could have sworn that I hit upon a website that provided instructions to play re-authored vcds on a PS2. What I mean by "re-authored" is that you must author the mpgs\avi into a PS2-style format, in order to play the video. Obviously, it is not the same as using a standard Nero VCD template and requires quite a bit or work. E-mail me and I will dig up the website from my bookmarks and send to you.

After looking into this on the web, I have found the answer is somewhat unconclusive.

It seems the playstation 2 was intended by sony to support vcd/svcd formats, but was released before this could be implemented. Apparently, new UK ps2's will play SVCD formats. I have just burnt one to try later today on my mates uk ps2 so i'll let you know.

There is no way to play vcd/svcd on a ps2 that doesn't support it. Boot disks etc will not work.

It is possible to write in .pss format, which is ps2 only. But the disk is useless if you want to play it in a standalone dvd player.

Another possibility is to wirte the data to a cd-r in dvd format, e.g .nfo files etc. Apparently this can be done and is called a "miniDVD". I'm yet to look into this one but it sounds promising. Apparently the latest vesion of nero has support for this...?

If anyone reading knows more than me please add to this thread.

    Regards,

  7. g'day guys, would PS 2 play mpeg 2 videos or movies burnt by PC dvd burners such as Pioneer DVR A03 (orA04) or Ricoh MPwhachamacallits? I already have the PS2 and I am about to get a dvd burner. I was just wondering if I still need to buy a different standalone dvd player to view some of my would be homemade movies.

  10. A good link is http://www.playstation-online.de/down_tools.shtml

I've successfully converted an MPEG1 (VCD) to the whatever format PS2 recognizes, burned it on a CDR and was indeed able to play it on my UK PS2.

However, the transcoding procedure is rather cumbersome and certainly not a 1-click-does-it-all approach.

I haven't tried SVCD or MiniDVD yet, so would be grateful if anyone would share their experiences.

    Cheers: The MacMan, Holland

macman, the process which you posted is the same one i tried, but with no success. I live in the US so that may be the problem. I would be interested in getting a sample of the iso that you created so i can see what im doing wrong. I have access to an ftp server if you would like to send it to me, i'd appreciate it.

  12. liquid217, I don't have the ISO on my machine anymore, and can't seem to be able to find the CD I burned neither  I'll try to burn it again, test it, and if you give me your ftp IP I'll upload it.

  13. People can do it succesfully out of the US but in the US we have no luck

  14. Just to let you guys know that IT IS POSSIBLE. See my previous postings above. I've done it a few times now, and IT WORKS.

Send me a note if you still got problems and we'll try to sort them out.

Please note though - the procedure is long and in most cases is NOT worth the effort.

My suggestion - go buy a DVD player (I just got a Pioneer DV-444 that can pretty much play everything - CDR, CDRW, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, MP3, u name it)

Anyway - always glad to push the limits of technology
