If you are using a cable router, they too have firewalls. However, that firewall should not be the problem, but I would look at the router company's website to see if they have specific info about opening the firewall for your requirements. If not, then call them directly to get additional info. If you have a cable router, then remove it and connect directly to the cable modem to see if that works.
Remove everything you can to see if it works. Look for any programs you have loaded to see if anything may be a problem, and test it by uninstalling it especially any firewall software you have installed. You may find the problem in the most unusual place. Some days it seems as if all I'm doing is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic -
i am running two computers off of the same router. one computer has no problem assessing those sites, however the laptop, which is wireless, is having problems.

Perhaps the wireless part of the router is the problem. Did you plug it in directly to see if that works?

normcar, yes I just tried plugging in directly, same thing, cannot log into these two sites........all other sites let me log in!

Are you using Peergaurdian? If you are using this or any other blocking software, turn them off. This includes pop-up blockers, anti-adware software, anti-virus, or other similar programs. Sometimes you may have loaded an app into the browser bar too. Close that as well. Try to close all possible process in the Windows Task Manager. Something is blocking you from getting to the sites. It's hard to believe that 2 different sites would block you. Therefore, you must be blocking them.

normcar, yes, all popup blockers have been disabled. I chekcked internet options under restricted sites, but these two sites are not there. the only popup blocker i have is google's toolbar. no mcafee or norton installed. no adaware software either.
-
Try unloading the Google Toolbar. Something is blocking the sites, and you need to start unloading software to find what is blocking it. Also set IE security settings as low as possible.
One possible thing to do, is to load the latest drivers for your lan connection. Don't know if or why this would work, but try anything at this point. Some days it seems as if all I'm doing is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic -
I suspect a popup blocker as well. You should be able to test this by turning on your popup blocker on your desktop system (the one that works). If it starts doing the same thing that will at least tell you that you can’t have a popup blocker enabled logging onto the web sites in question. I have seen computers that had several different popup blockers turned on all at once so look for that well. Both the Google and Yahoo toolbars have popup blockers plus IE 6 should have a built in one.

but whats strange is blockbuster doesn't use pop-ups when you log on... very interesting problem

I am kind of sure your problem is something like firewall is blocking mime content. In these days every one has more than firewall, on the computer, router, internet program and so on. If you have another computer go to those sites then export the cookies by going to file import/export on ie and import it the same way in this computer see if the problem is from accepting cookies. some info on mime

I've been long suspicious of various FF problems, especially memory problems, although they still pale in comparison to Internet Exploer's flaws and even it's "features". But this just moves me back into the Opera camp.
This was reported yesterday, BTW:

One user correctly notes that a partial workaround can be had by using NoScript except on trusted sites, although that seems like an IE-ish fudge to me.
Correction: Above link was to a user comment about a work-around. Here is the story link itself:

Good, that's a relief. I like Firefox even though I'm an Opera fan.

Aren't some sites not working with Firefox and or Opera, and you have to switch back to I.E. 6 anyway. That would be annoying to me.

That's most often due to sites that want to see a specific browser only, such as banking sites that only want to allow IE. Sometimes, you can get around this by changing your User Agent string (to make sites think you're using a version of IE, when you're not.)

I have never had that problem, even with banking sites. The only sites I've run across that won't work with Firefox or Opera are ones that are trying to hijack your browser or which make use of ActiveX controls, like some online virus scanners (though not all of those are legit either). A few sites didn't render well in Opera (e.g. Microsoft's site, though that seems to have been fixed as of Version 9 of Opera), and one or two in FF.

I think it's probably less prevelent these days than before; I used to see that complaint occasionally in the past from people trying to use browsers other than IE. I really can't speak from experience, either, as I haven't really encountered any pages that refuse to run without IE, and I don't bank online.
