  1. I was wondering why I cannot log into the following sites using Internet Explorer 6.0 on my laptop.
    www.friendster.com
    www.blockbuster.com

I have my privacy settings on medium with cookies enabled. When I use my laptop, I cannot access these sites. But if I use Mozilla, it works fine. Is something wrong with my IE? When I use the same IE version 6.0 with my desktop with the same settings on medium privacy, I can access these two sites fine. Its when I use my Toshiba laptop, using IE (not Mozilla), I cannot log in. There is no error message, just doesnt let me log in.

I tried uninstalling IE 6 and reinstalling it = same problem. I then tried installing IE 7 = same problem. Deleted cache and cookies, delete files = same problem. Called Toshiba tech support, we checked and I did NOT block any of these sites......its not a matter of life or death, but I was just curious cuase i've asked about 8 tech people, and they are stumped.

  2. tried both, same thing. Java is installed. The blockbuster site just says "make sure cookies are enabled" , which they are. Friendster just doesnt let me log in - no error message.

If the desktop works fine, with the same IE and same IE settings, do you think something in the registry is corrupted? Reinstall windows on my laptop? That is my last resort b/c I dont want to lose all my stuff over two websites.

Why not just access the sites with Firefox or Opera? You're far more secure with FF or Opera anyway. I wouldn't go reinstalling the OS; I'd consider this good luck.

P.S. You don't need Java for Blockbuster. Look and see if Blockbuster and friendster is in your Restricted Sites zone if you still want to use IE for this.

Normally, I would just say you have a problem with your site cookies as my first guess. But you have deleted them?

  5. I have deleted my cookies and no, I checked, they are NOT restricted. The reason I use IE, is because when I log onto Cisco VPN for work, they firewall Mozilla Foxfire. I can only use IE for company policies. I was just trying to figure out the technical issues behind this since the Toshiba tech support guys couldnt figure it out. He even had me go to Run and type something to fix the registry but that didnt work either.

Are you logging into your VPN and then trying to access those sites through your corporate connection?

OK, I got confused by your last post and that route can add all kinds of complications.

  9. Yeah I'm confused as well:either you are trying to access those websites at work or you are not.If you are at work then I would talk to your Admin but I don't think they would like that.

  10. No, I am not using this at work. I was explaining to CrayonEater why I cannot use Firefox. I am having problems with IE.

  11. i reinstalled IE 6.0 and even 7.0. Same thing, doesnt work. I tried using IE 6.0 on my friend's computer, thinking maybe friendster and blockbuster has some weird settings with my laptops, but to my surprise I could log in. I've spent weeks trying to figure out why laptop wont let me log in, but cannot figure it out. One of the techs told me to delete cookies and files, cuz sometimes corrupt files can prevent log in......did that and no cigar.

Some firewalls and proxies block either cookies or refer details, which can cause problems.

Also, you can happily run firefox and IE together, so there is no reason you cannot use firefox for everything except the VPN side of things.

you can't login to your account or you can't access the homepage? to login requires 128bit ssl, make sure it's enabled in i.e. options.

  16. i cannot log into my account. 128bit is enabled. I can get into other sites like bank accounts and credit cards, which all require to login with 128ssl. Just these two sites wont let me, on this particular laptop (friends laptop is ok) so I am trying to figure out whats up with my settings. Deleted all cookies, cache, files and restored default settings = no luck

Can you ping or tracert to those sites? Look at the tracert to see how far you get.

There could be a routing error with you or their ISP.

Their firewall could also be blocking you.

  20. how do i ping to their site?

to ping - start/run - type "cmd" in run box to get dos window. type "ping www.blockbuster.com" enter

something else to check is your hosts file. it's in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

open with notepad and anything like "127.0.0.1 www.blockbuster.com" is a blocked site.

exactly what happens when you try a log in?...
do you get the message.. "incorrect username or password"?
or do you just go back to the previous page?

  24. no error message, for the blockbuster site it just says that it needs IE 6.0 or 7.0 (which I have 6.0, also tried 7.0) and that cookies need to be enabled (which they are)

for friendster.com, it just doesnt let me log in.

  25. The reason is your ie does not accept cookies on these sites, if you have SP2 go to pop up blocker settings under privacy make sure these sites are not denied. Also default on advanced tab. It is also possible you have imported a certificate that is blocking it. If you export same cookie from another computer and import it into this should also work.
    Quote Quote
  26. yeah i checked, these two sites are NOT blocked. I dont know how to import cookie from another computer.

INFRATOM, does it get this complicated? I guess something weird must have happened since it can log fine with my friends laptop. Just I use mine for work.

yeah see i was wondering about the certificates too. i get an alert on one of my computers so i know blockbuster has a problem. have you looked through the tools/options/content and checked the certificates? maybe find blockbuster's and delete it? or press the button to clear all of them?

    Quote Quote
  28. yeah, there is no blockbuster certificate

  29. if you searched ie under security and privacy and it is the same and site is not blocked, it could be from your firewall, some firewalls like zone alarm they have a setting for mime content if it is active it will block certain things.
