  1. Hello, my friends!

As my tittle suggets, I am really frustrated. I have been looking and testing more than 10 DVD ripping softwares with the hope to find one that would allow me to rip a chapter from a DVD disc so as to save it to my hard drive without any encoding, that is, to save it as unencoded VOB file or unencoded MPEG-2 DVD-ready file. However, my search has been totally unsuccessful....I have checked, among many other softwares, SmartRipper, cladDVD.net, DVDStripper, iSofter DVD, Super DVD Ripper, ImToo DVD Ripper, Xilosoft DVD Ripper, Cucsoft DVD Ripper, DVD Riper Wizard, etc. The problem is that most of them rip the entire individual VOB files, and the few that rip chapters, re-encode the chapters.

Obviously, my question is, do you know a software that can rip chapters from a DVD disc without re-encoding them?

    Please help!

Yes it does. The rumours of DVDDecrypter's demise as a useful tool are premature.

It's still my ripper par preferance. Only when it fails, do I look at DVDFab Decrypter and other newcomers.

You're obviously confused about what you are doing. If I want to rip a single chapter (usually a VOB cell in length) I use SMARTRIPPER. There is also an option in SR to demux the VOB into elementary streams.

A ripper that encodes the "rip"? Never heard of one, unless you're talking about a transcoder that also has a rip engine incorporated into it.

    Or, do you mean "unencrypted"?

  7. Hi again, folks!

To those of you who advised me using DVDDecryter: thumbs up! This software works like a charm when it comes to ripping individual chapters without re-encoding them. I also really like the fact that the resulting folder includes a stream information section. So, thank you very much.

Gus1inger, I couldn't find the way to rip individual chapters using DVDShrink. Within the "Main Movie" folder, I got a "Title 1" covering the whole DVD. However, clicking on "Title 1" does not provide chapter information. I tried using "Open Disc" and "Open Files", but the same happened. I also played with "Files" and "Edit" but unsuccesfully. Could it be that DVDShrink works (chapter ripping) with some DVD's or DVDR's only?

SLK001, yes, SmartRipper is supposed to work with individual chapters, but I found it unstable in my computer. As for ripping and re-encoding, just check ImTOODVD Ripper. The resulting ripped files will be saved as VCD, SVCD, or AVI; neither VOB nor MPEG-2 DVD-ready files will be copied on the hardrive. (Yes, I know, AVI files are not really re-encoded, but it is easier and/or faster to work with VOB or MPEG-2 DVD-ready files when editing or authoring).

In closing, many thanks to all!

I don't think DVDShrink can select individual chapters, but you can select a specific part (start and end frames).
As for the imToo soft - it's much more than an encoder (as you've found out) - it's a ripper+converter. And the AVI output is very far from the original video - both codec and container format is very different from VOB.

Start and End frames in Shrink default to chapter points, but you can choose any I-frame within that. Re-author, drag over title, right-click, Set Start and End Point.

  10. Hi, Mats.hogberg!

    I appreciate your response.

As an AVI file is a file system and container, I think it is theoretically possible to reproduce a simple VOB file which is contained as mirror MPEG2 DVD-ready files in an AVI file. This article points in that direction:

    http://www.graphcomp.com/info/specs/ms/editmpeg.htm

Also, since there is no loss in quality from MPEG to AVI, I think this also applies to doing it from VOB to AVI. Of course, complicated VOB files like those from original DVD's with mutiple audios, scenes, etc., might be hard or not plausible to reproduce as AVI.

    Take care,

  11. Hey, Gus1Linger!

I am sorry, but I cannot make DVDShrink rips chapters. Could you please be so kind in explaining me this a little bit more?

    All the best,

    DVDShrink Re-Author Mode
Drag the title over to the left window.
Click the "set start and end frame" button(highlighted)
If there are chapters...they will show up there.
    You can only pick one at a time....or "5 thru 7"...you can't
    pick 5, 7 and 9(for example).
For that you'll need to drag title - pick chapter 5 only, drag title again - pick chapter 7 only, etc etc etc.

I had never noticed the button before - I always use the right-click menu. You learn something every day here.

  15. Thanks, guys!

On a related note, I noticed something when ripping the individual chapters to my HD. At the beginning of each ripped chapter, there is a little "click" that sounds similar to the clicks that we can listen from a scratch on a vinyl record. This happens whether the file remains as a VOB file or is changed to an MPEG2 DVD-ready file. My question is, will these clicks dissapear once I re-join the files to author a DVDR? Or do you think it is better that I get rid of each click by deleting a few frames (with the corresponding click)?

That happens to me sometimes too....but not very often. Not sure what causes it.
You may want to run the VOB's through FixVTS....not sure if it will help or solve the problem but it is free, easy and quick.....can't hurt right?

  17. Good to hear from you, Hech54!

Re: Noise at the beginning of ripped chapters.

I think that this sort of "click" could be caused by the fact that I am cutting exactly at chapter points, hence creating like a "double effect" (I still don't know, this is just a guess).

Aside from eliminating the first frames which encompass the noise, there might be other solutions. I am going to experiment a bit, and I am going to report back.

However, if anybody of you are familiar with this problem, please be so kind to let us know by posting to the group.

    Cheers,

    CAL "Disco Mak"

P.S.: SmartRipper also produces the same "click".
