I have an unusual audio problem. When I capture using VirtualVCR or ChrisTV, I get something that sounds like static in the audio. When I use IUVcr or ATI MMC to capture, the audio is clear with no static. I am using an ATI AIW 9600 Radeon 2006 edition 256 DDR. My source is a movie saved to my DirecTV DVR. My soundcard is a Soundblaster Live.

I made sure that all of the cables are plugged in properly and that the onboard sound with my motherboard is disabled.

I have tried to hook the audio up to my Soundblaster and just bypass the TV card but I cannot hear the sound. Is it possible to do this ?

I am hoping someone can tell me what VirtualVCR and ChrisTV have in common and what they do differently from IUVcr and ATI MMC with the sound. I am hoping that would point me towards a possible solution.

I would like to use ChrisTV if I can get this problem fixed.

    Thanks in advance !!

I had a similar static problem awhile ago that I think a program crash caused. Somehow "TAD IN" and "S/PDIF IN" became unmutted. I don't remember which one was giving the static but selecting them in Audio Properties (Play Control) and returning them to Mute fixed it for me. Might want to check that out.

The audio is hooked to your soundcard. You are probably plugged into the auxiliary-in or the line-in internal connection.

Okay I have solved my problem. It looks like the way I have been compressing the audio is what is causing my problem. Here are the specifics:

    VirtualVCR
    PCM 48000 khz 768 kbs

    ChrisTV
    PCM 48000 khx 768K bits/s

    ATI MMC
PCM 48000 khz 16 bit stereo

    IUVcr
    PCM 48000 khz 16 bit stereo 187 kb/sec

So when I use 768 kbs, I get static in the audio. When I use a rate of 187 kb/sec, the audio is clear. So when I use VirtualVCR or ChrisTV, I just don't compress the audio, and the audio sounds fine. Now I will see how the audio survives the conversion from AVI to MPEG2.

If anyone can shed some light on audio compression and why the higher bit rate would cause static, please let me know.
