Hey all,
I have the Lite-on SOHW-1633S burner and whenever I try to burn DVDs, I get an "illegal disc" error.
I'm using Nero 7 and I can burn Maxell DVD-RW discs without error, but any other kind of DVD and it won't work.![]()
I have no idea what to do so any help would be great. Thanks!
Here is a Nero log if that helps:

I just see the same thing, "Illegal disc". That just means the burner couldn't read the disc. Could be the disc or the burner. About all I can advise is to try a different brand of disc. If that fails, try upgrading the firmware of the burner.
The burning program used probably won't make any difference, but you could try a different one. ImgBurn is pretty good. Your DVD files would need to be ready to go, as it just burns. You might have to convert the DVD folder to a ISO with a program like ImgTools first.
Sorry, not much help. -
bigscaryrobot,
One thing I see in the log is:Physical memory : 445MB (456176kB)
Free physical memory: 83MB (85812kB)
Memory in use : 81 %
Media that is incompatible with the drive can also give this error. Since you are having a similiar problem with different media, it might be that updating your firmware (as redwudz suggested), would help the drive work with newer media. You currently are using version BS0H, and the latest version is BS0Y. You can get the latest firmware and the instructions (from liteon) on this page (the firmware is the first link on the page, the instructions are the last link).
I would also agree with redwudz's suggestion to try a burn using ImgBurn. -
