  1. I am looking for some help on a burning question. The DVDs I am burning are freezing up or pictures come to a standstill in both my stand alone DVD player, as well as on my desktop computer.

Here is some more info that should be helpful in determining the potential problem. I am using a brand new Compaq Presario SR1924NX with XP Media Centre Edition, 64 Athalon processor with 2GB and 200 GB Memory and a TSSTCorp CD/DVDW TS-H652L with Lightscribe writer. The unit is 3 weeks old.

The problem comes up in both vob copied files and converted avi files. I don't think it is the writer in itself, since 2 DVDs turned out fine. All others have the problem where throughout the film, the picture freezes up for a few seconds and then continues. In some cases, it freezes up and I have to stop the play.

I have tried the following to eliminate potential problems and find the source:
    - I have tried to burn different files to see, if there were problems with the source file.
    - I first used Roxio Media Creator 8, then Nero 7.
    - I uninstalled Roxio, then only used Nero.
    - I have stopped virus software and all other programs and have rebooted the unit prior to burning.
    - Disconnected from the internet.
    - I have tried DVD-R discs from different manufacturers. I mostly use Maxell, who I have had good luck with on my previous computer, which had the same burner in it (my unit got replaced, since my hard drive fried, that is how I ended up with this brand new unit)

None of these things have worked and I have gone through about 30 discs to find the problem source. Using Nero, I have found that the freezing is not as frequent, but still happens too often to enjoy a concert.

Any suggestions ? Thanks for your input.

  3. Not all DVD's can be burned at the maximum rated speed. What speed do you use to burn your DVD's?

  4. I've tried both maximum and minimum speeds. I have also set up computer up for maximum performance, but the problems still exist. I noticed that the pictures don't freeze up completely anymore, but the freezing is still there for about 4 or 5 seconds and then the play continues.

Again, I have used about 10 different source files, just in case one of those was corrupted, but that isn't it. I also ran a test on the burner itself. I am out of ideas what to try next.
