I have a Sony DVD Handycam. As I use the camera, I can review the individual clips. Once I "finalize" the disc, the DVD contains a menu with the individual clips. The file structure looks like an ordinary DVD.
The camera ships with software that shows you the individual clips and these can be tranfered to the HDD as individual mpegs. The bad news is that I lost the disc and now I need a way to extract these mpegs!
I understand that VOBs are just mpeg container files but I cannot find out how to pull the individual mpegs out!

Some authoring applications will accept a .vob file if you simply rename it as a mpeg. (eg: Vob_1-2.vob renamed to Myvob.mpg)

if you like the software that came with the camera - you can get it from sony

Also a lot of dvd authoring software will recognize vobs with no need to convert. Tmpgenc Dvd Author is such a program. Just point it to the vob file and you can proceed as normal.

I tried VOB2MPG. In order for this to work I would have to do each chapter one by one by one by... 14 times for my 14 clips.
As for the idea of editing the VOB - the problem is that I end up with vob (or two) and these vobs contain a number of clips. I have no idea where they start and stop in my editor. So - I use Womble. If I want just a clip in the middle, there is no easy way to find it.
It is wierd - I understand vob files to be containers for mpegs but have not found a program that loads a vob and then shows you the mpegs in the container. With the software that came with the camera (Pixela Picture Package) you load the vob, and you see a corresponding number of screenshots. I suppose this is some proprietary tool...
btw - I found my disk and made about 20 copies for myself.XP
