Let's start by stating the obvious... I know almost nothing about Apple computers.

At any rate, my old pal just purchased his first(!) computer.... a Mac.
He said that he has a bunch of .mp3 sound effect files on his hard drive and
asked me to help him burn them to a CD. We couldn't find any method of
burning them..... What's wrong? Am I missing something or does a Mac
need a dedicated burning software application, like Nero on a PC ?

What burning applications would you recommend ? Freeware or Donationware?

  2. Mac does not need an app for burning CD or DVD...It has that option built-in...Find out more about it here:

Burning a CD or DVD on a Mac

    Or..

Use iTunes to burn mp3 or audio CD/DVD...Use iDVD /part of iLife softwares package which comes with every Mac/ to author as DVD and burn your home movies captured and edited in iMovie, mixed with your home photos captured, arranged and processed in iPhoto...

If you are looking for something similar to Nero app check Toast application...

  3. He can burn his MP3 files (as audio or data) with iTunes but Toast is the OS X equivalent to Nero and worth every penny.

Build a playlist and click burn
A picture is worth a thousand words, but a good camera is worth about a thousand bucks.

We tried using iTunes, but it seems to be *mandatory* to convert the files to .wav or
.cda files, in other words, the total data size of all the .mp3 files was below 200 Mb but
iTunes said that it was too large to fit on a standard 700 Mb disc. What's up wit dat ?

  6. iTunes->Preferences->Advanced->Burning->Disc Format. Take your pick of MP3 CD or Data CD, depending on what hardware you intend to use the disc on. MP3 is probably the safest all round bet but YMMV.

With iTunes, you can burn a CD as
    - Audio CD (uncompressed)
    - MP3 CD
    - Data CD (all files in a play list)
    (set in Preferences)

Burning as a regular Audio CD (CD-DA), can inflate (e.g. x10) the needed storage beyond the capacity of a CD-R.
Burning as a MP3 CD would keep the .mp3 files as-is, in your case needing ~200 MB.
