What's the best storage for these hard disks and can oyu tell me a site that sells them cheap?
Aswell as good boxes that will protect CD's etc.

Pelican was the first case to come to my mind too, but they are proud of them and charge for it. Nothing against them other than the price, I would guess that they are probably the industry standard for what they are. I have one that I would guess was ten years old, dirty and scuffed up, but still water tight I would assume. (I have never actually tried to submerse it)

There are other knock off brands out there of the moulded plastic type that are possibly lower cost and lower quality.

I tend to see alot of electronic equipment that is shipped in tradeshow type cases. I am pretty sure that they are called ATA cases. Years ago I had a friend that made these type cases at a place called Star Case.

I have also seen stuff shipped in ammunition boxes lined with foam packing, but in these times, that may just get your stuff blown up by the airport bomb squad.

How do you plan on shipping it? Airplane carry on, checked baggage, ground shipping, FedEx/UPS, ocean container or in the back seat of your car?

If you are using a moving/shipping company, they will usually give you the information that you need for you or them to do the packing. Some companies advertise their expertise in moving electronics while others will shy away or charge extra for the service.

Again it would help to know how you plan for these to be moved.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

  4. If you have to ship them. You better go with the pelican cases fro those Harddisks. To figure out the structure of the case, the foam etc, is a very expensive work. You can save on the discs.

Any things important, you want to hand carry. Clearing shipping in another country is not always easy.

On the cheap: get the plastic clambox boxes that hard disks are usually sold in (at least Seagate are). A PC accessories shop may have some spare if you don't. Then just wrap that in some bubble wrap and fit into a wooden or metal box. Not indestructible, but unless someone drives a truck over them they should survive. Also the plastic and bubble wrap is fairly transparent so security may not feel the need to chop them open. I suspect being destroyed by overzealous security is the main hazard.

Please also consider tape backup. I have a large audio collection and I store LTO backups
of my drives in another location. I'm currently using 200GB drives and the same size tapes
and the backup and restore procedure is fairly simple.

I doubt anyone sells them. This is just how they're packed when you buy a new drive. They're not extremly strong, but they provide a degree of shock protection. Ask at your local PC shop that sells drives or assembles their own PCs, they can probably put a bunch aside for you if you ask. Or maybe they have some other original packaging material.

Duct taping around bubble wrap would be effective, but possibly arouse suspicion.

I agreed. You should really consider backup these harddisks in media to insured against failure. If any of your harddisks is in trouble, you can restore from the media.
