    Hey !

First of all, i want to appreciate this wonderful site for providing such good information.

    Problem 1 :

I downloaded a movie from net. The movie is approximately 800MB. It is in VCD format..i.e (.DAT) format.

The movie hangs when i fast forward it. But i am able to see the movie continously without fast forwarding it. I use WMP 11 for playing this movie. This is not the first time but it has happened many times.

I am able to fast forward till half of the movie . But cant do after that. Then one more thing i tried to use VCD cutter 4. version but i didnt split the movie. So did this affect the video ?

So what software should i use for optimising the video or what software should i use it to play the movie where i can fast forward it ? Or else please temm is there any other solution.
Will the movie hang like this if i burn this movie to CD ?

    Problem 2:

Can i convert this 800 mb movie to 700 mb so that i can burn it in 1 VCD. What software should i use for this conversion ?

i tried multiplex using TMPgenc ! but i still have the same problem...!
I also used VCD gear and mpeg-corrector ! But no use !

I think i did something wrong with VCD cutter only after that video is not working properly.. !
I inserted the frame selector ( i am not sure abt the tool name) from half of the movie till end but i didnt split it. Only that part is not working while i fast forward

If you are using the 500 Mhz. PIII that you indicate in your profile, your problem is probably because your hardware can't keep up with the data rate demands of video.

    I've done this before.
Use tmpgenc 3 xpress to convert vcd to mpeg2 dvd format.
Then use nero to write a mini-dvd.

alternatively, goto www.erightsoft.com and download superv19
convert to mpeg1 with a lower bit rate.
    quality but works

Could be this was originally two files joined together, but time code is messed up at the join.

Try VCDGear. Convert the DAT to MPEG with "Fix MPEG errors" ticked.

-- edit: I see you already did that. Or try MPEG-VCR (tools-> GOP fixer); or open the file, then save (use Z not ^S) to a new filename without changing anything.

You may be able to fit this on one VCD disk; if you have a reasonably recent CD burner, it should be able to burn "90 minute" (800 MB) or "99 minute" (900 MB) CDRs if you can find them. If your authoring app doesn't like them, try to write to an ISO or BIN and use Fireburner.

  7. Video hangs during Fast Forwarding in WMP is a problem exists in many versions of WMP. Try other players, like winDVD, PowerDVD, and Divx players, etc....

Are you sure you can't get larger capacity CDRs? Here the most common size is 800 MB.

If you're playing it on a PC, there are many formats more compact than MPEG1, a DivX file of the same quality is less than half the size.

Aside from that, if you're going toplay it in a VCD player, either you'll have to cut it to two disks, or edit out 10 minutes. Unless perhaps your player supports CVDs or SVCDs.
If you're playing it on a DVD player, some of these can play DivX. Otherwise, you can make a MPEG2 with higher compression.

Man I haven't worked with vcd in a long time but....

As I recall you can write a 800mb vcd to a 80 minute cd (often called 700mb) but not a 74 minute one (around 654mb). The reason is that vcd have very little error checking and are written in mode 2.

    edit
I just did a bit of checking and found this comment somewhere which explains a little better why you seem to fit more data on a vcd disc

VCD are written in mode 2 form 2, which uses the full 2352 sectors in comparison to mode 1's 2048 sectors.
If your vcd is under 803mb then you should not have to change it if you burn it the right way. Not as a data disc but as a vcd.

    Hope this helps

    hey gll9

burning not possible in video cd !
    Why not?

You say you have a vcd file, it is 800mb.

I know it should fit on a 70 minute (700mb) cd.

What is the problem in burning a vcd?

I use Nero and when I drag and drop a file in the videocd window it gives messages about the compatibility of my files and options to convert to make them standard. If you want a non standard vcd disc (like kvcd) you can turn this off but right now all we need to see is what it says about your file.

Do you use Nero? What software do you have for burning?

Can you explain step by step how you are trying to burn this file.

the entire movie is 797 mb...so i guess 2hrs movie cannot be writen in 1 vcd..!

    1) First open nero
    2) then make video cd
    3) add video files
    4) it starts encoding or something like that...it becomes 1gb+...! it says it cannot be burned in 1 vcd !

You are not providing key information after step3

What does Nero complain about before it starts encoding. If this was a standard vcd then it would not complain nor re-encode. The messages here are very important. Also you can turn off the option to burn a compliant vcd and it will not rencode the mpeg and it will fit on a standard 70 minute disc.

On the first panel after choosing the option to burn a vcd 2 things can cause a problem.

    1) remove the check mark on "create standard compliant cd"
    2) Since you downloaded this public domain video, it is possible that it is not from your tv system ie... ntsc vs pal. Your selection here may cause re-encode issues.

Like I said I'm rusty with vcd creation but this should work.
