I rented the recent remake of the shaggy dog but returned it twice since my cyberhome player severely darkened the picture repeatedly throughout the film. Now I'm wondering...is this macrovision gone mad?

shaggy dog is the 1st rental played in the thing

Stupid question....... Are your DVD player outputs being fed thru a VCR prior to reaching the TV? That will certainly invoke the dreaded Macrovision.

It never even crossed my mind...
It's the only way I could hook it up.
Fortunately, I have an RF Modulator somewhere around here.
