Can someone with experience with this machine comment on its performance?

I'm sure it's fine. It's one of the exceptions to the no-combo rule.

I owned an SR-MV50 for awhile... it is identical to the 40 except that it has an RS-232 computer control hookup. The VCR side of the unit is a typical JVC S-VHS machine with the Digipure DNR/TBC processing. It performs about the same as a HR-S9911U. The DVD recorder section is basically a DRM-100S. The unit has twin TV tuners (separate ones for the S-VHS deck and the DVD recorder). It has a "kiosk" DVD creation feature that allows you to author continuous loop type discs for exhibits and sales demos. Build quality is the same as JVC's current consumer products, despite being "Pro Line" gear.

Would you say the quality/performance of your unit was good? Why did you get rid of the unit you had? Can you recommend something better?

The MV50 worked well, yes. I buy, test and then sell lots of different audio video products as sort of a side hobby... I simply can't keep them all.

The best performing JVC S-VHS machine with DigiPure was probably the HR-S9600U, followed by the HR-S9800U. They were also built better than the other 9000 series units. The HR-S7600U is another excellent JVC S-VHS machine.

There are a number of very good DVD recorders out there now. I personally mostly use a Toshiba RD-XS34 at this point, but I have owned and tested many different models that are perfectly acceptable.

Combo VCR/DVD units usually compromise build quality and functionality compared to separate units.
