since you used word "convert" in your question, Im pretty sure you can find answer for yourself :P

    BTW:
what you mean "convert mp4 to avi"??
Just install apropiate codec (i.e. ffdshow) and it'll be "avi" and will play like avi

Installing ffdshow won't make an mp4 an avi. Also won't decode it unless you have an mp4 splitter installed.

I was referring to playing it, not converting it, exactly as i wrote it.
And no, you dont need splitter if its a normal mp4 (not some matroska ogg etc container).
I have only ffdshow codec on this machine and i play all divx/xvid/generic mp4 files with it no sweat.

There is no divx/xvid/generic in mp4 all ASP video streams are the same. Unlike avi, there are no fourCC's. avi != mp4.

You can't play avi's without a splitter either. Just that Windows comes with an avi splitter. It doesn't come with an mp4 one though. mp4 != mkv, etc. either.
