  1. I have spent over an hour now trying to figure this out.

It started as two sets of subtitles. Disabled VobSub. One set remains. They are not hardsubbed. Renaming the srt file removes them.

I want whatever is generating them GONE. I want VobSub to be what is generating my subtitles.

This is really pissing me off, and as excessive as it sounds, I'm about to format over it. Little stuff like this pisses me off more than not being able to use the computer at all.

I have uninstalled all the programs and codecs that I think may be doing this, but I cannot be sure.
    - Adobe Premiere Pro 2
    - Divx
    - Ogg Codecs
    - Nero 6
    ...and many more.

Removing codecs in Control Panel/Sounds/Hardware/Video codecs, they do not stay gone, the few that are left just come back if I try to delete them.

Honestly I'd just like to delete all the codecs on my machine and start over. I am about to throw everything out the window I am so pissed at this. Again, by disabling VobSub, only one set remains, but I cannot figure out what is generating these.

  2. Some players have their own subtitle engines, and can play certain subtitle formats on their own. Maybe if you told us which player you're using...

Or maybe if you used a different player...

  3. Media Player Classic.

There are 6 video filters in use when the subtitle text is present, and 6 when I change the name or delete it...

EDIT I have not had this problem in the ~2yrs I've been using MPC.

  4. I also use MPC and I always start with 2 subs. I just turn one of them off. Doesn't bother me. I realize that doesn't solve your "problem". Perhaps someone else can help better. celtic_druid, where are you?

Do you have DirectVobSub installed or the Subtitles options in ffdshow enabled? Also, are you using an external splitter like Morgan Stream Switcher, or Haali's?

(And yes, celtic_druid would probably be a better person to ask. )

  6. I had VobSub installed, no more... is that different?

    FFDshow subtitles are disabled.

No, I do not have the other two installed.

If it helps, these subs are Arial font, white with black outline, have a translucent gray shadow, and are larger than normal subs. This is a lot of the reason I want VobSub (not Mystery-Sub 3000), because I can make those small so they don't overlap the video that much.

MPC has a built in subtitle renderer. It is similar to directvobsub since a) Gabest wrote both and b) they share a lot of code. MPC's subtitle renderer however is better quality, so I don't know why you would want to use dvobsub over it.

Anyway you can disable MPC's sub renderer from recollection simply by unticking "auto load subtitles". Setting the output to overlay would also prevent it from working since it only works with VMR7/9 or Haali's renderer.

If you want to have dvobsub installed for other apps, you could use MPC's filter overrides to block it from loading. That way you get MPC's internal sub renderer, plus dvobsub for other apps.

Yeah, I was looking at that setting earlier, but I didn't mention it because I wasn't sure it had an effect on displaying subtitles in MPC, just loading them.
(note: for anyone else wondering where this setting is, it's under Options > Playback.)

You should be able to change the size, font, style and appearance of subtitles MPC generates, using the options under Options > Subtitles > Default Style. In fact, that might be another way to detect whether or not the extra subtitles are being generated by MPC.

  9. THANK YOU! It was the auto-load subtitles option (which I probably missed because it wasn't in the 'Subtitles' section). I can finally, FINALLY rest about all this.

Then reinstall all the stuff I deleted, and hope that I didn't delete any necessary codecs that I won't find/remember in the future...
