  1. My friend's Desktop has both Windows 98SE and Windows XP Professional installed. Win98SE is installed in C drive of the HDD and Win XP Pro is installed in D drive. As the OS on D drive had become slow we decided to remove the OS on D drive and install a fresh copy of Win XP Pro. I formatted D drive only and started installation of the fresh copy of Win XP Pro. After formatting, copying of setup files, the Desktop rebooted and after few secs the Desktop is getting stalled. I have repeated the procedure at least ten times and the same thing happens. Suspecting some hardware conflict I removed the UPS cable connection to one of the USB port and Internal Modem. But, the same thing happens again and again. I tried booting from C drive and the system is working normally in Win 98SE. As C,E and F drives(other partitions) has all in FAT32 I am formatting D drive in FAT32 also. I am really stuck up and dont know what to do. The specification of the PC are as follows:
    Pentium 4 2.0 GHz
    Gigabyte 845G board
    128MB DDR RAM
    40 GB harddisk Seagate
    LG Combo
    LG CD rom
I will be grateful if someone can point one the things to check inorder to rectify the problem. Thanking you.

You may be better off to unplug all HDs except the one you want to install XP on. The problem with this is that it may want to rename your XP drive to C. But before you plug the other drives back in, you can try renaming it to D.

This is just a guess on my part as I have rarely dealt with dual boot setups. I'm sure there is a good reason to use W98, but I was very happy to be rid of it myself.

I wouldn't make any serious changes until someone with more dual boot experience replies, though.

Even though you have reformatted the D (XP) drive, the issue is most likely on the C drive. XP will allow you to install it onto any drive of your choosing, however, there are system files that are always placed onto your primary (C) drive. So while reformatting removed most of the XP install, it did not remove the core system files.
