I've never worked with subtitles before. I've browsed thru the list of guides and the forum topics, and I'm still confused.

I have a movie downloaded from a newsgroup. The movie itself is an AVI file. There is also a very small 'idx' file and a somewhat larger 'sub' file. What do I do with these files in the conversion process, and then in the burning process?

If someone can simply point me to the correct tutorial or instructions, I can take it from there.

    Thanks.

You can use convertxtodvd, add the avi and the sub and convert. Done.

Or use some free tools like avi2iso,thefilmmachine,favc,diko....but I'm not sure if they supprt sub/idx subs though.

OK, I'll check it out. While I'm at it, are there any articles, tutorials, etc about subtitles in general or specific that I should read?

I'm trying to tie up some loose ends here that got away from me while working a bunch of overtime.

Regarding this thread, I probably should have mentioned that I use TMPGEnc3 Xpress and MainConcept for converting files, and TMPGEnc DVD Author for authoring and sometimes for burning. I also have ImgBurn and DVD Decrypter (but I don't think those two would come into play for the subtitle thing).

Anyway, with the tools that I mentioned, how do I use the idx files and the sub file that I downloaded with the movie? Or what?

If I need to do so, I can download the convertxtodvd but can I do it with the tools I already have?

  6. Hi-

how do I use the idx files and the sub file that I downloaded with the movie?

If using TDA for authoring, you don't use them at all, since TDA doesn't support subs. You can convert the IDX/SUB to SUP format subs using SubToSup, for authoring in Muxman or IFOEdit (both free, but no menus).

...or OCR it to .srt, and author with DVD-Lab that supports both subtitles and menus.
