I would like to split a video file into two equal parts, such that when you burn it, you would have Disc 1 and Disc 2. This is one whole movie, so I want to make it into Part 1 and Part 2. What is the best way to do this? Obviously not Nero because I've seen a few threads that don't think too highly of it and they talk about using a "real" or "proper" editor. Nero is very complicated and makes things way too difficult. I don't want to have to go through 16 steps and a bunch of crap just to split one movie into two parts. I also want to burn it when I'm done, to two separate discs. Does this mean that I will need to split the movie with one software/program and use Nero to burn it? Hope you can help. Thanks.

What kind of video do you have to start with (avi, mpg), and what kind of video are you wanting to have at the end?

    This would help

Does the type of video affect this process? Honestly, there's a couple of them I want to do it with, but the one I'm stuck on now just says video file. It doesn't even tell me what format it's in unless that is the format. I don't care what form it's in when it's done, just so that I can play it on my dvd player and watch it on my TV.

Do yourself a favor and turn the option "Hide extension of known file types" off if you haven't done so already. (Under Tools/Folder Options/Display(?) in any folder)

The file type (avi, mpg, flv, mp4, ogm, mkv, divX & cetera) determines what tool (and method) to use to split it, yes.
Use GSpot (2.52 beta) and post a screen shot.

It seems a lot of people are having difficulties with splitting, joining burning video files and using Nero. I have found a solution to these problems as well as to my own problem in this thread. Please view my answer in thread https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=290957&highlight=

  7. It is really rare to hear people use Nero to edit video files, most people use it to burn DVD.

To spilt file, Use DVDshrink's reauthor mode, and set to no compression, and use the start/stop to specified what you want, and then click backup and ok.

To join files, just renumber the vob files as VOBedit, open the first vob file, and then click join clip.

  8. It seems a lot of people are having difficulties with splitting, joining burning video files...

Only when you refuse to tell people what kind of files they are after repeated requests. And why are you promoting commercial products when freeware does the job just as well or better? Was this whole thread a set-up for your spam promotion?

By the way, the best way to split a retail DVD9 into 2 pieces, retaining all menu functionality, is with VobBlanker:

plz allow me to clarify how to tell what type of video you have on your hands , open a folder.. any folder, look up of that folder, see the menu option that says "Tools"? Cool, now click it and a menu drops down.. click on "Folder Options".. now select View from the menu tabs, the 2nd one.. look for "Hide extensions for known file types".. got it.. ok.. now uncheck that circle.. now all of the files on your computer now have a visible extension for that file, like movie.mpg or movie.avi, what we need to know is what type of avi or mpg or even .mov or .rm it is.. there are many types of movie, look here for a list...

when you know what you have.. post back or google an answer.
