I'm trying to capture from vhs to pc/dvd the recording is about 90 minutes I'm using a cable with rca to usb and Turtle Beach Video Advantage software. Problem is 33 minutes recorded as an avi took 40 gig. Right now I'm converting the 40g partial file to mpeg-2 with Blaze Media Pro. Does 40 gig sound right? Or did I capture it wrong?

  2. Sounds about right for uncompressed YUV with 4:2:2 encoding. Try compressing while you capture with the HuffYUV codec. That will usually reduce the file size by half.

  4. To install HuffYUV, unpack the archive, right click on the INF file, and select install from the popup menu.

YUY2 and UYVY are just different orders of the same 4:2:2 subsampling. I420 is a 4:1:1 subsampling and will be a little smaller, but it will also have less color resolution.

After installing HuffYUV your software should have some way of selecting a compression codec. Capture as YUY2 and use HuffYUV. That should reduce your file size by about half with no loss of quality.

Thanks, I must have downloaded the wrong one mine doesn't have an install when I right click on it. I'll look for another one and see if I can get this program working. In the mean time Power Director (which came with the bundle) is capturing it using about 10% of the space VA was using. I've been using Video Advantage for all my little jobs 5-10 minutes and like it this is the first time I've tried a bigger job with it. It's the first time of tried this Cyberlink software we'll see hopefully it doesn't look like crap.

  6. If you downloaded the version linked to from videohelp.com:

    http://neuron2.net/www.math.berkeley.edu/benrg/huffyuv-2.1.1.zip

the zip file contains 3 file:

    huffyuv.dll
    huffyuv.inf
    readme.txt

After extracting the files right click on huffyuv.inf and select "Install".

If you have Windows set up to "Hide extensions for known file types" you won't see "huffyuv.inf", just "huffyuv". I'd also recommend you disable that "feature" of Windows. Seeing file extensions is critical to the use of Windows.
