  1. Hi, I have been using maxell dvd-r since the very begining and have followed through their yellow, green and gold incarnations. recently they have become incredibly unreliable for burning movies.
it will finish the burn, and verify, but when i watch it i get pixelation and image problems. I use the Sony DRU-810a and even tho it can burn at high speeds, the only chance that i have of having a good burn is if it is at 2x. can anyone help? are there better media? mabey the drive itself is the problem?

Maxell outsources their dvd media now to manufacturers like RITEK which isn't good qualtiy dvd media. Use DVDINFO PRO or DVD IDENTIFIER to get the media codes for those Maxell dvd-r discs that you're using. My guess would be they're RITEK. The Sony 810a drive is a rebadged BENQ 1640. You could crossflash your drive to the official BENQ 1640 firmware or you could just use better brands of dvd media like VERBATIM or TAIYO YUDEN. Crossflashing your drive will enable you to use official BENQ firmware & the use of a tool called QSUITE 2.1 which remembers write strategy for different dvd media id. You could also upgrade your drives firmware. Take a look at the BENQ & SONY FORUM's at CdFreaks.com.

I have rebadged BENQ 1640 drives that all have been crossflashed successfully to the official BENQ 1640 firmwares. Last note the BENQ 1640 drives have had many firmware upgrades to meet the newer dvd media. Certain firmwares will work better than others depending on what brand of dvd media you're using.

The Plextor 740A drive is another rebadged BENQ 1640 drive as well. It does not include Benq's QSUITE 2.1. The only way to be able to use QSUITE 2.1 is to crossflash the Plextor 740A & the Sony 810A to the official BENQ 1640 firmware. This can be done by using the BQFLASHER.EXE or WinDWFlash.exe. With BQFLASHER you can just use the official BENQ exe firmwares. With the WinDWFlash.exe you'll have to use firmwares that are in CVT.file format.

  5. I only buy Maxell if it says Made In Japan. This guarantees MXL media code. Not a single coaster in over 300 discs burned so far. The only problem is that it is very hard to find in stores now. They are now all Made In Taiwan.

they are hard to find and now all are made in taiwan. I don't even bother buying Maxell anymore. I buy Verbatim whenever it's on sale. It's even getting difficult to find "Made In Japan" Sony DVD+R media which carries the TY media id. There are some Sony "Made In Japan" but they aren't TY media.

I have a 100 pack spindle of Maxell Taiyo Yuden, "Made In Japan" waiting to be used but I'm saving it for a rainy day!
