Ok, I have an MKV file whose contents are as follows:
    Video - .h264 (codec AVC1)
    Audio - .dts (6 channel)
    subs - S_VOBSUB (codec SPU)
    Chapter file

Muxing Application was libeblm v0.7.5 & libmatroska v0.7.7
    Writing Application was mkvmerge v1.5.6

I have been unable to successfully demux the subs with MKVExtract (GUI & Wizard) or VirtualDubMod - all latest versions. VDM does not support the sub format and therefore will not load the file. MKVExtract (both GUI & Wizard) will successfully extract the video and audio files, but every application chokes on extracting the subs - the crash message indicates an error signature in ModName: cygwin1.dll, if that is of any help.

Anyone have any ideas on this one? I need to be able to convert it all to an AVI/SRT format in order to be able to play it on my Philips 642.

Sorry, I didn't (and don't) consider this a "newbie" conversion (nor am I a "newbie").

Do you have the latest version of mkvtoolnix installed? (For MKVExtractGUI.)

Also, are you using the latest cygwin dlls, and have made sure you don't have differing versions in other directories across the system (to avoid "dll hell," or other conflicts)?

I believe so - do you have a URL for the CYGWIN DLLs? (I remeber it being hell trying to find them the last time)

    The CYGWIN1 I have is v1005.6.0.0

well, it looks like that's what it needed was a newer version of that DLL

(now I just have to convert it all to AVI/SRT ;c)
