Ok, i'm in the process of converting a PAL 25 fps video to NTSC using DPGPulldown. I successfully encoded a hybrid PAL file with 25 fps at 720x480. I input this file into DPGPulldown and select the setting "25->29.97" and hit convert. It goes through the motions error free but the resulting file has a differnet runtime than the original. They are the exact same size but the original runs for 1h:35min, and the new file outputted by DGPulldown is only 1h:19min long. This obviously throws my audio out of sync and is a problem.
Someone please let me know whats going on!

I'm no expert but I've used this method a few times successfully.. It did not even occur to me to check the runtimes.. But no worries, I think.. With fps change from 25-->30, one would expect a shorter runtime. Just go ahead and author.. all s/b fine. Or you can remux the a/v and check it PowerDVD to see if it's in sync..
Again, no expert but have done it successfully ~5 times. good luck. If problems, just post back and i'll try to help. But there're plenty others here who can resolve fast.
Edit: just noticed you said 'hybrid' file. Do you mean source was mixed with PAL and NTSC footage? If so, hmm... not sure as I've never done that before. -
Hi-
Open the MPV (not the pulled down M2V) in DGIndex. Up at the top I'll assume it says 720x480. Now run the Preview (File->Preview). In the information window that opens up on the right, it's supposed to say 25.000000 fps, PAL, and Progressive. Does it?
Yes, what's a Hybrid PAL file? And how are you determining the running times? -
Hello, and thank you all for your responses.
Well it appears i jumped the gun on my question because i burned the two files (.m2v and .ac3) and everything is OK and in sync.
I guess it just takes burning and playing back in the finalized format to work correctly. I do know for sure thatr the times WERE different (still are) and when i played the audio and video together in my authoring program, they were out of sync.
Oh, and let me explain the "Hybrid" file. I considered it a hybrid because it had both PAL (25fps) and NTSC characteristics (720x480).
Thanks again. -

When played through your authoring program it might be out of synch, but I don't know how you can say there's a 16 minute difference in the lengths when obviously there's not. I'd say there's something screwy with the playback of your authoring program, but at least it authored it correctly, even if it can't play it correctly.
And once it's run through DGPulldown and the M2V created, it's no longer a hybrid, but pure NTSC 720x480@29.97fps. -
The 16 minute difference was confirmed by both the time readings in virtualdubmod and cyberlink. Also, the hybrid file i was referring to is the file BEFORE putting through the pulldown program (meaning its 25fps with 720x480 resolution - encoded this way by TMPGEnc).
Again, thanks for the responses. -
Geez. You're saying there's a 16 minute difference between the original PAL video and the reencoded and DGPulldowned NTSC video? You know that makes no sense, don't you? Not and have the unchanged audio remain in synch. No, the only way to be sure of the pulldowned length is to make a D2V of it using DGIndex, make an AviSynth script file using that D2V, open it in VDubMod, and then check the length. VDubMod, PowerDVD, and your authoring program are all giving you the wrong length. Just for you I ran some tests of a PAL2NTSC project I had lying around:
Original M2V opened in VDubMod:............................ 2:07:54
AVS of that original M2V opened in VDubMod:........... 2:07:54
Reencoded 25fps 720x480 MPV in VDubMod: .............2:07:54
Reencoded and DGPulldowned M2V in VDubMod:....... 2:13:14 (maybe a different version than yours)
AVS made from that DGPulldowned M2V in VDubMod: 2:07:54
PowerDVD playing reencoded and authored DVD: .....2:07:54
PowerDVD playing reencoded and DGPulldowned M2V: No length given (maybe because old Ver. 4)
It looks like PowerDVD gives the correct length after it's been authored to DVD. Why don't you try that? -
Hey manono,
Thanks for your testing and efforts to try to explain.
However, i don't think we need to argue/discuss the weird results I see from my resulting .m2v files because, as i said earlier (second post), since authoring everything behaves as it should.
So even though an explaination would be nice, i'm willing to just accept the fact that it's "weird" and remain happy that the final authored result works perfectly fine.
Thanks.
