  1. I have a chance to buy a samsung dvdrom from a store that had it returned because it wont read cds..only dvds..

    getting it for $20.canadian ($1.99 US )

think it could be fixed by a flash or should I leave it alone and use it only for ripping?

I bet they never even bothered finding out why it wouldnt play CDs. In fact, it wouldnt surprise me if you got it and it did play CDs.

I wonder if it is an RPC 1 Unit?

If it is, keep it or resale it.

RPC units have no region protection and will play any dvd with minor software adjustments.

If it is RPC, I imagine u can command a fair price.

  11. update:

I installed the drive.. everything worked the first time (but data was VERY slow reading).. rebooted..only dvds would read..everything else would keep chugging and would lock the system..

    the drive is a samsung SD-608 (8x40x)
flashed the drive..same.. flashed the region settings (now region free)..same.. updated to newest flash..still only reading dvds, but reads them great

It is not too big of a deal since I have 2 other drives already installed

    If u have a fast CD-ROM it's kool.

It would only be important if u only had space for 1 CD-ROM or DVD.

My desktop has 2 hard drive slots, 1 floppy, 1 zip and one cd-rom or DVD.
