Hey all
Recently I incountered a problem with dvd shrink 3.2. It has been using all the buffer when ripping. I have 2gb of ram, and it was completely filled. I was using it combined with img burn. Has anyone encountered this problem? Whats the solution, Im kind of worried why its doing this. I tried backing up some other movies to see if it was the software acting up, like MINORITY REPORT, and it didnt encounter this error. So it must be the movie Im guessing. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Ps: I was backing up INSIDE MAN, and RV the movie.

I figured it was the some king of new protection. So this software will clean it up for me, and let me use dvd shrink? Thanks for your reply buddy. Do I need to bundle this program with anything else, I noticed it use fixvts, do I need to download it?
-
Jorge,
RipIt4Me will definitely defeat the new copy protections, and clean the rip up all nice and pretty inside, so DvdShrink will work without problems.
Yes, you do need to download and install FixVTS before installing RipIt4Me. You'll also need DvdDecrypter (if you don't already have it).
There's a very nice step-by-step guide available here that will answer any questions you might have, but just to be sure, I'll check back later to see if you have any questions or problems. -
Jorge,
Unfortunately, the last time I converted a dvd to avi was years ago. Logically, if the rip is good, and there's audio sync problems, the problem is in the conversion. In that case, your best bet is the DVD to AVI forum, where the conversion gurus hang out. They can give you much better advice than I can.
Good luck -
thanks, I just tried to convert the vob from chicken little to avi with virtualdub mpeg, and it persisted to do it. Oh well, I'll just nudge the delay like I did before. Thanks for all your help buddy, your a champ.
-
AnyDVD will remove that problem with audio sync when converting to avi? And how does it work? I was reading that it works as a background program, so will it work with dvd shrink.
I just tried it, I ripped chicken little using anydvd in the background, and dvd shrink. I then opened the vob in virtualdub mpeg and and converted it. I checked the audio and its out of sync. I might have set it up incorrectly or I did something wrong, can you guys help me out.
PS: If I use clonedvd and anydvd will I need ripit4me and fixvts anymore? -
Jorge,
AnyDVD just does the same job as RipIt4Me, except it costs $40 (instead of free), and the rip isn't as good as what you get from RipIt4Me. AnyDVD will, however, interfere with RipIt4me, so you shoud uninstall it, or at least make sure it's disabled before using RipIt4Me.
As to your out of sync conversions, I poked around the conversion tools section here at VideoHelp, and did a test run with the "celtic druid free version" of Fair Use Wizard. Click here to get the free version I used. I don't know if you've tried it, but in my test it produced an xvid avi with absolutely no sync problems at all, and the video quality was very good too.
Here's what I would suggest you try (using Chicken Little as an example):
Code:1) Rip the original disk with RipIt4Me 2) Create an ISO of the rip using ImgBurn ("Build Mode", and "Output"-"Image File") 3) Start Fair Use Wizard. a) Give the project a name (like "Chicken Little") b) Click the "Browse" button next to the "Folder" box, and create a new directory named "ChickenLittle" on whatever drive you want. c) Put a checkmark in the checkbox at the bottom that says "Full Auto Mode" d) Click the "Next" button at the bottom e) In the window that pops up, click the "Browse" button and select the ISO you created with ImgBurn. f) Click the "OK" button, and let the program do the conversion.
As I said before, I generally don't convert dvd content to avi, so there may be better or easier ways to perform the conversion, but this version of Fair Use Wizard seems very good (at least to me).
Re your PS:
RipIt4Me (using DvdDecrypter and FixVTS) is the most stable, reliable, and certain way to defeat the newer copy protections, and produce a high compliance rip. It's up to you what you use to rip, but my advice would be to stick with RipIt4Me, and leave the $40 in your wallet. I use CloneDVD2 regularly. It's a very good tool. But I use it in conjunction with RipIt4Me, not AnyDVD. -
First of all I appreciate that huge post. Shows you really care, and enjoy what you do, and what we all like "VIDEO".
Yes I noticed its basically the same thing. I tried it, and it worked fine, it just costs 40 bucks to get. Now, as for vob conversion I wanted to stick to one program, and Im currently using virtualdub mpeg which has never failed, and is recommended in use with my archos av300 (video player like the apple ipod just better). It creates a great avi, with good compression. As for chicken little, I had this problem earlier that was solved by just adjusting the delay, which is really a cheap way of getting the job done.
now what I did was, I got the dvd, ripped it using clonedvd, and then I opened the file in dvd shrink to convert it to a single vob. Then after it encoded. I opened virtualdub mpeg, I opened the file, loaded my settings, and converted to avi. Complete failure, the audio was still out of sync. Im going to try it with ripit4me, and see if if gives me the same results.
Ps: I did notice that clonedvd was extremely faster than ripit4me. -
Jorge,
Since CloneDVD doesn't work with encrypted DVDs, I'm assuming you meant that you ripped it with AnyDVD. Yes, AnyDVD would be faster than RipIt4Me, but that's because it does less processing, and is why an AnyDVD rip is not as perfect as one from RipIt4Me. Regardless of what you're doing with the rip, if it doesn't have high compliance with the dvd specification, you're introducing a potential problem. RipIt4Me produces the highest compliance rip at this time.
The Fair Use Wizard I was telling you about is actually using VirtualDub MOD for the encoding, so you're still using what "is recommended in use with my archos av300". If you skip Step 3c in the method I described earlier, you get all kinds of options as to the output specifications.
As far as I can tell, the specifications your archos av300 requires are:
audio must be MP3 audio at 192kbps CBR or less
video must be encoded with xvid or divx 4 or 5, and the resolution must be:
640x304@30fps
640x368@25fps
640x480@"low fps"
Fair Use Wizard has no problem with the audio part, will output 640x480 video (but not the other two resolutions), and allows you to use xvid or divx. You can adjust the bitrate of the video, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Your current system for conversion may be close to perfect, but if you're encountering sync problems, it would appear there's a flaw in the system. If you have to manually tweak the sync, then you're only addressing the symptom, not the problem. I think Fair Use Wizard's use of indexing to assure sync is a good bet, especially since its' output can meet your device's requirements. It's also a lot easier. For example, the DvdShrink-combine-to-one-vob step is entirely unnecessary with Fair Use Wizard.
Since it's your system, you decide which works best for you, but I would strongly recommend you try Fair Use Wizard, and see if it works better for you. -
First of all thanks again for all the info youve provided me
Well vegas Ive taken your advice, Im going to stick with ripit4me, I actually like it more than clonedvd and anydvd. Well as far as the audio sync problems with chicken little, it is caused by unregistered cells, well thats what they told me, and thats basically why I have to tweak the delay.
By the looks for it, fairusewizard gots its down on most things. I have divx pro v5.2.1 so it will use the same compression which is what I wanted. And for audio I use lame. So I guess I should give it a shot. I mean not having to convert to one vob using dvd shrink is a plus. I'm going to give it a shot, I'll post my results. Again thanks for your help. -
Jorge,
When I was doing research on your project/problem, I was surprised that I could find only one guide (posted on several sites) for converting video to use in your av300. Let's just say that guide is...not simple. The more complex a procedure is, the more likely the introduction of an error. The guide additionally only covers general conversion, nothing specific to dvd, so even more steps must be taken that are not covered by the guide. Consequently, there are many places where something can go wrong. Of course, I don't know if that's the guide that is the basis for your system, but given the lack of alternate techniques available on the internet, it does seem likely.
The current trend in accomplishing complex tasks is for someone to create a GUI frontend for command line interfaces to other programs in such a way that a form of "expert system" is achieved. A perfect example is RipIt4Me. Some of the processing is done internally by RipIt4Me, but it also calls other programs (passing the correct settings to be used by each program) to complete the overall task. That technique is popular because it allows people to successfully accomplish very complicated tasks quickly, reliably, and without a steep learning curve.
That's the theory, anyway, behind my testing, and then suggestion of Fair Use Wizard. It's approach is similiar, in a way, to RipIt4Me in that both are enhanced-GUI-frontend-expert-systems. Since sync is a problem to you, Fair Use Wizard's use of an indexing system was a prime consideration, but the fact that it handles dvd specific chores transparently is another factor. Throw in its' demonstrated (at least in my limited tests) ability to successfully convert with virtually no user interaction, yet also allows access to "expert user" features, and Fair Use Wizard emerges as the most likely candidate. -
Yep, I agree. The more complex something is the more chances of error can occur. Now as far as my problem goes, I guess its a dvd issue because all my other dvd's that Ive converted have come out great without a problem, so theirs something that ripit4me hasnt gotten out of it I guess. I had posted this isssue before right here.

Again, I want to thank you for your help, and input vegas. -
Jorge,
I hate to sound optimistic, but there is a good chance I've identified the cause of your problem, and how to fix it.
What is different about Chicken Little is its' use of multi-angles to display signs and other printing in whatever language you choose to view it in.
Fortunately, Fair Use Wizard turns out to be multi-angle aware. Just after you select the ISO you're going to work with, there is a window where you select the program chain to use. You'll notice there are three chains (27, 28, and 29) that are all the same size, duration, etc. They are the program chains for the english, french, and spanish versions of the movie. I selected chain 27 (english), and let Fair Use Wizard go to work. At the end of the conversion, it plays on my computer with no sync problem.
The only question is if it also works for you, and if the output from Fair Use Wizard is useable in your player. If you still have a problem, let me know, because I have an alternate way to strip the extra angles. It's just not as easy. -
Jorge,
Just to make sure you understand, you don't need to do the following if you're going to use Fair Use Wizard. You would be doing manually what Fair Use Wizard takes care of automatically. It should allow you, however, to use whatever conversion process you want on Chicken Little.
If you don't have the latest versions of PgcEdit and VobBlanker installed, you should take care of that before proceeding.
To remove multi-angles from Chicken Little:
1) Start with a nice, clean rip of the original
2) Open the rip in PgcEdit
3) Double click on VTS 3 - TTN 1 to open it in the PgcEditor
4) At the bottom of the PgcEditor window, click "Del Angles"
5) In the little window that pops up, make sure the "Keep Angle" slider is set to 1 (for english), and click the "OK" button
6) Close the PgcEditor window, save the dvd, then close PgcEdit
7) Open the modified dvd in VobBlanker
8) In the "Settings" frame, click the "More>>>" button
9) In the "VOB internal pointers" frame, make sure there's a checkmark next to "Fix always VOB SYNC/SRI pointers in Titles", click the "Apply" button, then the "Close" button
10) Set the "Output Folder" textbox to wherever you want
11) Click the "Process" button
When VobBlanker is done, you'll have a single angle version of Chicken Little to use in your chosen conversion process.
If you run into another multi-angle disk in the future, you can use the same procedure. Just change the location of the target TTN in step 3, and the angle selection in step 5 (if necessary). -
Well vegas, the thing is that I only ripped the movie, which is the copy I made for myself, and the one Im using for this project. Now after ripping with ripit4me, I opened it with pgcedit. I clicked on the vts on the left and the editor opened. I went down to delete the angles, and it said there werent any. So Im a little lost here.
If this doesnt work, I'll take it the easy way out and use fairuse wizard again. -
I was using fairuse wizard and it gave me a message saying abnormal program termination, and it closed.
-
Jorge,
To see if it made any difference I ripped Chicken Little again, using RipIt4Me version 1.4.11.0, in movie only mode. PgcEdit finds the angles on the new rip. Fair Use Wizard finds the angles. I selected chain 0 in Fair Use Wizard, and it converts it with no problems.
Now I'm confused. If RipIt4Me doesn't remove the angles, and you're going straight from the ripping to PgcEdit, there should be angles. The only thing I can think of is what you wrote in your second to the last post makes it sound like there's a chance you might be ripping a previously made backup, not the original. If that's the case, you need to re-rip the original with RipIt4Me (for this conversion) because something is wrong with the backup.
If you did re-rip the original, and the angles aren't there in PgcEdit, something must have removed them between the rip and PgcEdit. Are you performing any process (of any kind) between the rip and PgcEdit?
One more question...are you using ImgBurn version 2 to create the ISO to feed into Fair Use Wizard? The reason I ask is not all ISO creation programs are the same. DvdShrink, for example, doesn't create a proper dual layer ISO. I'm using ImgBurn v2 to create the ISO, and at least until we get things working for you, it would be a good idea to copy my flow as closely as possible (since the conversion works for me). -
Vegas
Yes Im ripping a previously made backup, not the original movie. So Im going to have to rip the original movie then. Oh and I wasnt using imgburn to make the iso, so there was my other mistake. Sorry for making you post so much, its my fault for not following your instructions closely. Thanks again. -
Jorge,
This may sound strange, but I'm glad to hear you were ripping a backup. It's something that can be changed, and with any luck will end the problem you've been wrestling with for 4 months (including the other thread).
By the way, you don't owe me any apologies, and as far as I'm concerned, you made no mistakes. We've just been having a friendly Videohelp kind of discussion about a mutual interest, where we both learned something, and which hopefully will lead to resolving a problem. To me, it sounds like time well spent.
After re-ripping the original, and trying your new knowledge and tools, if it still doesn't work, post back with what went wrong. I hate troublesome disks, and would be happy to further engage that little cartoon chicken in battle. -
If I can chime in about the audio/video delay. This is usually caused by the presence of "useless" tiny cells at the start of the movie PGC in protected DVDs. In normal DVDs, the movie PGC starts right away (with the studio logo, or the credits, or whatever). In protected DVDs, usually there are a few black cells that are played before the first actually useful cell. These cells may or may not have audio, and they are the ones responsible for the audio/video delay (because tools like DGIndex for example don't realize that these tiny cells should be ignored).
The solution is to rip the DVD in movie only mode with ripit4me. If you read the release notes, you'lle see that ripit4me in movie-only mode removes ALL the bogus tiny cells at the start of the movie. This isn't true in all other modes (including ISO).
My advice is, if you want to convert your DVD to any other format, then rip in movie-only mode: You'll get a much much cleaner DVD, and most importantly, you'll get rid of all the tiny cells (which are indeed referenced, which is why FixVTS won't remove them).

I had no idea you were the author, but I as well would like to thank you. But I had a question, my dvd was previously ripped using dvd shrink, only ripping the movie and not the menus, and extras. Will this conflict with your method. Last time if I remember, it didnt work either. Thanks
-
@VegasBud, you're welcome!
@Jorge, well, it depends on whether the movie was protected, i.e., had these annoying tiny cells at the start. If you post your IFOs (I'm not sure whether there's a rule against that in this forum, you might want to check), I'll take a look to see if that could be the problem or not.
