  1. Hi, I am new in this forum.
I tried to convert a DVD into AVI because I need to insert some clips into a new video using Première Pro. I tried using several different conversion programs, but the results were very poor. The only one who gave me a good result was FAIRUSE WIZARD (I found this suggestion in this Forum). But when I import the converted .avi file in the storyboard of Première, I don't see the video (while the audio is ok), just a black frame. Any suggestion?
    Thanks in advance
P.S.: I tried to open the converted .avi file using Windows Media Player, and it works perfectly.

You are probably missing the codec needed for Premiere to read the file. Check your .avi file with gspot and verify that the video codec that it finds is installed.

  3. Thank you. I tried this tool...but how can I check if Premiere does not have the codecs? Sorry, maybe this is a stupid question, but I am a novice.

g-spot will tell you if you have suitable codecs installed. Post a screenshot from g-spot and we can tell you what it is saying.

You have the correct codecs, however I don't believe Premiere likes importing or working with Divx encoded files. Which version of Premiere are you using ?

You might be better off loading the file into virtualdub, and saving it out as losslessly compressed lagarith or huffyuv (note : you may have to install one of these)

  7. Thanks a lot for your quick answer.
I am using Première Pro 1.5 and normally it works fine with all the dv files I capture from my camcorders.
I will try your new suggestions and hope it will work.
    Thanks again

Please let us know if this worked. Out of curiosity, I converted a DVD to XVID using Fair Use Wizard and imported it into Sony Vegas 6d with no problems. I don't have Premiere so I don't have a way to check it with Premiere. Fair Use Wizard can convert to either XVID or DIVX. You didn't say which one you converted the DVD to but you might try saving it in whichever one you didn't the first time. It may be that Premiere will accept the other format.

  9. Hi everybody. Yes, it works! The only small problem still remaining is that the movie is not - how can I say? - "clean". In a few words there is a black frame all around the movie (while I normally work in 16:9 with no frame around). I don't know if this small problem can be solved. Anyhow the most important step was the conversion in .avi and importing in Première. And this is done. Thanks again.

A lossless codec is probably the best, but since you mentioned DV earlier; I use VirtualDub with the Panasonic DV Codec installed and convert some video to DV format for easier frame accurate editing. It would at least be better than Xvid for editing. The downside to DV is the fixed frame size, but if your video is already the proper size, no problem.
