hi all, i got a prob wiv one of my computers. When i boot it up, it locks up on the main boot screen. I am unable to get into safe mode, but when i take the hdd out and put it into my other pc it boots? does this sound like a hardware prob?

It would be better if you just added your last post into the first post by editing instead of starting a new post.

But, unplug all your drives on the computer except the boot drive. Remove all cards except the video card. If you still have the same problem, exchange out the memory. Next the video card. I'll assume the boot drive is OK since it works on the other computer.

At this point all that's left is the power supply or the motherboard. If the power supply is working properly, then it's the motherboard or possibly the CPU. Unplug the computer and pull the BIOS battery for about 5 minutes, then replace it and try to boot. (You can do this earlier in the list if you like, but you will lose your BIOS settings. Make a note of them if wanted)

If it still doesn't work, consider replacing the motherboard. The CPU is unlikely to cause this problem.

  4. In general, you cannot move a boot drive from one computer to another unless they have identical motherboards.

  5. Sure you can. It will load a bunch of extra drivers and may request you re-register Windows, but it should boot. Boot in Safe mode and bypass registration, this will test functionality, which is all you need at this point.

Remove and Re-Insert Video and Memory, one at a time, checking for beep codes with the boards removed before you re-insert. A loose AGP card can definitely cause this problem.

Windows re-install is also worth a shot before buying new hardware.
