  1. I'm looking to buy a wireless router and modem for a desktop PC. The DSL speed is 1.5 Mbps. I guess I need a router with the modem built in, and the modem for the PC. Any suggestions on brands/models would be appreciated.

  3. The provider is Qwest. They want $50 to buy or $5 a month rental fee just for the modem, no router.

Many ISPs provide free modem including Earthlink, Bellsouth, Atlantic Nexus and others, and I'd consider switching ISP to get free modem. I've had very good performance from both AT&T 6850G and US Robotics 5461 routers, and I've seen the US Robotics from time to time for $20 after rebate from various vendors on http://www.bensbargains.net/. I also had Hawking and D-Link routers that were returned for refund due to very poor range. Also I have a Speedstream 5660 modem which is no longer used due to free modem from new ISP that I could let go for $20 plus shipping if you really want to stay with Qwest.

Check reviews at http://www.dslreports.com/ before choosing another ISP if you do decide to switch. Note Mozilla browser gives option to view reviews by state and by type, i.e. cable or DSL, but that option's not seen in IE 6; go to http://www.mozilla.org/ for free Mozilla download if you wnat that functionality.

  6. This may not be an option for you but check out goodwill. I frequent goodwill (you would be amazed at what people give away, picked myself up a tivo series 1 with lifetime subscription for only $15. Only had to get a remote for it) They often have the msn dsl 1000 (which is a rebranded SMC 7401, search the web for reflashing instructions) and once I found the gray actiontec wireless router/modem. They usually cost between $5-15. Most likely you will need to pick up a univeral power adapter somewhere (unless you dig through all there adapters and find one that would work)

Of course you will still need something to expand your network (switch or wireless router) so in the end it may not be worth it to you. I have always prefered having seperate items (seperate modem seperate router) in case one fails.
Hunting, sure i'll go hunting. When is cow season?

  7. I ended up signing up for DSL service through CC since they had a $70 rebate on the Actiontec router/modem, so it cost $20. They also give a $125 gift certificate for signing up through them instead of through Qwest. Good thing I went there before signing up through Qwest.
