I've had some progress and some setbacks with setting up a Hauppauge Bt878 Wintv card.

This is a crosspost about the error called 418 capture device not detected.

For set up I'm using the ars technica guide for capturing and cleaning video written in 2003 and available at ars technica.

The install of Virtual Dub and Virtual Dub+ Sync
is on a fresh install of the Windows 2000 operating system
with Service Pack 4.

The machine configuration I'm using is a bench test older
machine and by itself probably can't do much in capturing.
But for setup and testing it should work for now.

Drivers for VFW have been loaded successfully after some trial
and error with download sites. The Hauppauge driver currently
available for VFW is called

w2kdrv311.exe

The Wintv version is wintv2k40_21126

and the channel info is found from the vhs player which is my
source.

These 2 files are availabe at

http://www.hauppauge.com/html/sw_nt.htm

I got the Dscaler and copied the 3 necessary files from that into
virtual dub.

I got the PICVideo MJPEG codec and installed that from Pegasus.

I got the Huffyuv 2.1.1 codec and installed that with some difficulty.

Ok, so all this stuff is swimming around and I shut down.

On reboot, I try to load Virtual Dub or Virtual Dub=Sync and
I get the Error 418 capture device not detected. Nothing plays
with while my tape is going to monitor activity in the capture window.

I load Wintv2000 and it plays fine and shows channel 4 identified.

I reload Virtual Dub 1.6.16, go Device tab -> Hauppauge wintv VFW
that is deiscovered and the image plays.

But the tuner is still not detected.

A restart puts me back into the 418 Device not found error.

Once I get these things going I am able to do some of the set up
but have done no capture yet.

Virtual Dub+Sync version used is

Virtual Dub 1_5_04_sync1_04.zip

What is causing these conflicts?

Why does Wintv2000 always work and Virtual Dub (either version) can't find or never holds its settings?

System on which this is install consists of:

Tyan Trinity motherboard
Pentium 2 400nHz
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Linksys NIC
Maxtor 5G (!) drive
394K mem
Matrox Millenium vid card-- no AGP

Source: vhs Emerson player via cable out connect.

The capture card is the

Hauppauge Wintv
NTSC
61381 rev D133

I want to be able to perform a clean install of all the
software on a larger hard drive without all the duplication
of versions of this and that.

But first I want to know about the error 418.
