  1. Converting single vob to ipod h.264 "finishes" in 2 seconds.
I used MTR to make a single VOB from my DVD.
I can provide more data if this is not a known issue.

On the bright side, it is converting my PSP h.264 (of the same film)
    to iPod h.264 nicely.

If you need a piece of my video is required, let me know how to cut
    the VOB up.

I use MPEG Streamclip (with Apple's MPEG2 decoder present) to save as QT (MJPEG-B, full quality, all other settings as normal). When done, drop that MOV into ffmpegX and encode for iPod H264. If the film is dark, you might alter the settings in MPEG Streamclip to boost brightness by about 20-25% and saturation by 30-40%. You may do a small portion of the original VOB in MPEG Streamclip and then run that through ffmpegX to verify that you're getting what you want before committing to the entire length of both conversions.

My guess is you do not have the QuickTime MPEG-2 playback component installed.
iPod h.264 defaults to Decoding with QuickTime (Options tab), so it fails decoding the VOB file with this setting. Uncheck that option and try again. It should now then decode the VOB the same way as the PSP h.264 preset, hopefully with the same success.

  4. Thank you for the replies. ffmpegX "just works" so often I forget some of the obvious stuff. This has been helpful.
