I'm wondering if someone could make a post comparing the different intel processors..it's making my head spin. I used to upgrade when I could double my processor speed..used to not be that difficult

    200mhz p1 to 400mhz p2
    400mhz p2 to 800mhz AthlonXP
    800mhz AthlonXP to AthlonXP 1800+ (ALMOST 1600mhz)
    AthlonXP 1800+ to P4 3.06ghz (800mhz fsb, HT)

now I go to look at processors and there have been 8 million different flavors released and the clock speed is going down, but other factors make them way faster...
Just a thought if someone has a good bit of information about the differences between:

Pentium4 (The "regular" ones like I have)
    PentiumD
    Core Duo
    Core 2 Duo

the same goes for video cards..I liked it when all I had to decide is "do I want the voodoo3 or the TNT card?

Obsolete is only when it will not do the job.

Would I ry and encode video on it? Nope. Not needed for that.
    Your 486 w/16MB memory, boots up FASTER than a P4 3Ghz comp?

Damn that P4 3Ghz comp must be POORLY maintained, with a clogged HDD that probabley has'ent been defragged in YEARS!
Sorry I must have meant to include Win95 on the 486 and XP Pro with NIS & Antispyware S/W on the 3Ghz. Spy Sweeper & Norton both kill startup times.

Win95 is just so much quicker at what it does compared to XP. OTOH it doesn't do many things that XP can do.

Yep, I know a guy that's still using a dos system for his business. I made him a little menu driven system that launches his main program, backs up to zip/cd, restores from zip/cd..etc.

It's actually using a k6 500mhz but it could just as easily be using a 386-486.

  4. It is probably trouble free, not likely to need any security updates or to ever catch any kind of malware. And I'm guessing it is a turn it on and very quickly it is ready to go.

The employees will never waste time surfing the net either or open an infected e-mail and trash the computer.

  6. It's the old adage, there's never a good time to buy a computer. But I'd say, your chip is still relevant. If they're still making motherboards for it, then it's hardly dated hardware. I wouldn't consider the P4 s478 chip 'outdated' but you try finding a pci-E board for it. It's fairly diffcult. I would be suprised if there is much between to these two chips ( Pentium D & Core 2 ) vs their price.
