I THINK this is this the right forum for this, if I'm wrong, sorry, and, please move to appropiate forum.
I had some "dvd-rip" files that I acquired that came encoded as .avi. Converted to DVD the orginal two discs become four. I thought I'd process the soundtracks through Goldwave, save them as .wav, re-intregrate them through TMPGEncoder, and, re-compress them into two DVDs again. Unfortunately, the result had problem with the sound being in sync with the video. Was the problem in re-compressing the files, or, what?
Thanks.

You will probably have to track the problem back through your process to see if you can find when it occurred. What's the sync error, offset as in the error is the same throughout the video or does it gradually get worse as the video plays? How much error? A lot or a little?
Do all 4 discs have the same type and amount of error? If so, likely something in the process. If it's an offset error, could be in the splitting or joining. If it's a gradual sync loss, check your audio and video running times to see if they match.
Bad frames or missing audio can cause gradual loss also, but it will tend to be more random throughout the different videos. Did you scan for missing or corrupted frames before encoding? Another possibility is a framerate change or bad handling of VBR audio.
I've also wondered at times if the video has a offset originally and it gets removed when encoding or handling it with the software.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. -
Frankly, I don't know where the sync problem is coming from. The first disc, as posted from the source where I obtained the files, doesn't seem to be out of sync. But in sampling two of the three remaining discs, it is a noticable lag of a few seconds between the video track, and, the sound track.
I've had this problem, (video/sound not syncing,) with TV files I'd acquired. But found a solution in decompressing the soundtrack, and, saving it as a seperate .wav file, through GoldWave. Then I recombine the two through TMPGEncoder. Doing that, I had no lag problem. Untill now. All I can think is that somehow in the process in converting the orginal disc contents for online distribution, they somehow became corrupted, and, that unless someone more profcient in sound/video syncing can tell me an easy way to fix this problem, if I want a copy of these discs, I'll have to break down, and, buy them.
