I just purchased a NEC ND-6750A slim dvd writer that I wish to use externally. As well, I bought a generic case from Meritline.com. I can't find the link to the case but it's generic and has a lithium battery in it as well. The only thing is it's plastic and not very sturdy which is important since I will be carrying this often when traveling.
The problem is it doesn't work well. When I plug the USB into the computer it comes up recognizing external device, the dvd drive type, etc. and if I put a CD in it will recognize it but if I try to use it beyond that it's very flaky in how it works. Then I may plug it in an hour later and it will simply lock up my computer, not recognizing anything I put in the drive, until I unplug it.
I had done some research on drives and saw many aren't reliable when used externally. It is one reason I later didn't buy a LG drive I looked at and went with NEC instead. The problem is I thought this was a reliable drive so I'm thinking it may be the case. I thought it may need a firmware upgrade but yet I can't find any updates. Is the problem the case? Are there any cases that people recommend? Since this is a portable drive I want to stay with a slim type drive.
