Hi to everyone, i have a wedding video with unedited footage on a DVD. What i would like to do is edit the footage using vegas. How would i go about the process to edit, then to reauthor onto a new dvd without losing quality, i know it involves converting file formats, encoding, decoding etc. But if someone could help me through this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Latest vegas 6.0d can import directly from some dvds.

"* Support for VR-mode DVD HandycamŽ camcorder discs has been improved. When importing video from Sony DVD Handycam discs in VR or Video mode, each chapter is now imported as a separate file."

Or you could use vob2mpg and make one mpg file from the dvd and try import or convert the mpg to dv-avi with virtualdub-mpeg2.

But you will lose some video quality as all those methods require reconverting.

If you want less reconverting but still advanced editing you can use mpeg video wizard, it only reencodes the transisitions and similiar.

You can't do it in Vegas without losing some quality. How much is debatable, but there will be a cost. If the edits you need to make are simple cuts, I would suggest using a dedicated mpeg editor such as video redo or Womble Mpeg VCR.

If the edits are more extensive, and you want to do transitions etc, then try to get the original footage. Mpeg is not designed for editing, is a poor source editing, and generally makes life harder than it needs to be. It's quality also suffers very quickly from re-encoding - more so than a format like DV.
