I have been trying to encode an NTSC DVD-video disc based on two freely available (NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGMENT) avi's from a family memebr in Europe. The original file is encoded as an AVI in PAL format I believe. I have been able to convert any other file they have sent to me without any problems. I am currently using Nero 7.0 ultra to author the dvd, including creating the menus. I know there is an update to 7.2, but that version had codec errors that prevented me from encoding anything at all. I wiped it clean from my system using Nero's cleantools and registry cleaners then re-installed 7.0. Works great except for this one file. Halfway thorugh the file the av sync gets all wanky. Any idea why or how to fix it? Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

    -Daniel

That is a narrow mix. You have what I would call one higher end product, and the rest are second or third tier at best.

In the experience of many here, so-called authoring tools that try to do everything for you (encoding, authoring, burning) tend to do none of them particualarly well. The best results tend to come from the using the best tools for each stage of the process.

For PAL to NTSC conversion, the DGPulddown method seems to get the best results. It is well documented in several posts around this site.

In the case you have mentioned, if the audio is in sync through to a point, then suddenly goes out of sync, I would suspect a probelm with the audio or video portion of the file. It is not unusual for poorly done format conversions to have sync issues, but these usually manifest as a drifting over time, not a sudden change.

  3. Nice choice. One expensive professional product and 4 pieces of junk.

Here's a bunch of different ways to do that sort of conversion: https://www.videohelp.com/convert#4;41 The DGPulldown method is there also.

The only all in one I would try that with is ConvertXToDVD, but you will still get better results with the right individual tools.

It does sound like you might have an error in the file that is causing the sync problem.
