  1. Are there any guidelines to buy new DVD blank media?

According to my recent research, many manufacturers do not make their own discs. How can we tell, it is impossible to scan the disc in the store? Should I go for brand name products? Or, should I just go from something on sales?

For instance, there are selling the Philips 100 spindle of 16x DVD+R in FutureShop for $28.

    Get one of these:
SONY DVD-R or DVD+R made in Japan,
or VERBATIM DVD-R or DVD+R made in Taiwan or Singapore,
or MAXELL DVD-R or DVD+R made in Japan.

Or order Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim online.

I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I'm having a problem with which type of DVD to buy to record. I have a Sharp DV-SR45UC and I've been using Sony DVD-RW with no problems but last week I bought Sony DVD-R and they don't work with my recorder. My manual states that the recorder won't work with DVD-R General Ver 2.0/8x and the Sony DVD-R is Ver 2.1/16x. I thought because I was using Sony DVD-RW that the DVD-R version would work without a problem.

Can anyone help or direct me to someplace that can help?

Thanks in advance if anyone answers this message.

Take a look to the left under 'DVD Recorders' and you should find a similar model. Check the comments there and you should get an idea which discs some members use.

It sounds like that model will only work with 4X media. It's getting a little hard to find, but if you can't locate it locally, there is www.supermediastore.com, www.meritline.com, and www.rima.com, to mention a few that should carry them online.

lordsmurf's site listed above has a lot of good information on DVD media that may help also.

BTW, you should start a new thread when you question is not directly related to the original post.

    And welcome to our forums.

Moving this thread to the Media forum.

Maxell is good? So, if I see Maxell made in China, should I assume it's not the same?

Actually, someone tols me that Maxell is not so good. How do you think ?

Stay away from those, they're garbage. I bought them once and none of them played in my dvd player. promptly returned them and bought some Verbatim. I've never once had a problem with Verbatim media.

Maxell is not made in China. Maxell is only made in Japan.
Realize I refer to manufacturer, not the brand name.
The brand name can have one of several IDs inside (MXL, CMC, RITEK, RICOH, etc).

Lots of people say lots of things, doesn't mean they know anything.
You have to learn how to discern between the two.

  9. On the other hand, I am talking about brand name, not manufacturer. Like I said, not easy to find the proper manufacturer before making the purchase.

I assume MXL means Maxell and all Maxell branded DVDs are made by MXL, right?

So, if MXL are good, all Maxell branded DVDs are good as well, right?

    Wrong.
Maxell, the brand, uses discs from several manufacturers.

There is Maxell the brand, vs. Maxell the manufacturer. NOT necessarily the same. Capisce?

I have a 50-disc spindle of Verbatim 16x DVD+R at home and I looked up and down and I could not find where it was manufactured.

Any opinion of TDK and HP?

  13. I actually have both 8x and 16x Verbatim DVD+R at home.

I use Nero's Get System Info to check:
    8x = MCC 003
    16x= MCC 004

Are these some kind of country codes?

You can plug those manufacturer codes into the DVD Media page to the left in the 'Search Media Code' box. Then scroll down to Verbatim and you should see your media. You will also see other brands of disc that use the same manufacturer. I believe they are commonly from Taiwan, but could be made in other countries.

Manufacturer COUNTRY is typically written just below the barcode, but only if you kept the exterior wrap that had all the info on it. As that's usually the first thing that gets ripped off, guess not.

EDIT: left out one word, which makes a BIG difference

If you would actually read any of the information being given here, you would not be asking these stupid questions.

No, MCC is not a country code.
No, the manufacturer info is not written on the package.
