    Hi All

I am still stuck with the good old dvd (vob) technology dvd players.
But, these days all files available at rapidshare are encoded in xvid format and also
I always see XviD, DivX mentioned together. Does that mean that all dvd players
supporting divx would play xvid files also ?

..but the same restrictions apply to both formats - many players choke on qpel and gmc encodes.

Circumvent it by not using these features when you encode to DivX/XviD. AutoGK has some different default settings tailored to fit a certain player chip set, and avi.net produces AVIs that play on almost any DivX/XviD player. The chip set determines what a player plays and not. Look here for a rundown of the capabilities of different chip sets. The DVD player list here at VideoHelp contains chip set info.

  6. Xvid is Divx backwards. VLC is a great player, its free too. Otherwise XBMC ranks on the top of features & what it can play for me.
