Originally, it was thought that pointy-headed scientists would demote Pluto from planethood.

But surprisingly, they went the other direction:

We no longer have nine planets - we have twelve! Of course, the vote is still coming up. But the scientific panel studying the issue has spoken - and their findings aren't likely to be disputed.

Absolutely fascinating stuff. 8 major planets and 4 "plutons" so far. Betcha that definition will get revised soon too though, considering Pluto and it's moon's funky orbit. Maybe they'll classify it as one planet or make a new class for that situation later on.

It never ceases to amaze me what beauty and discovery the heavens hold.

I didnt read this link yet, but the guy that discovered the would be number twelve said something to the effect that if the new definition takes place that there would be like 52 that fall into the definition. Hell, I can't name all the days in a week very well let alone some 40 additional planets!
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

Actually, rather than 12 planets, I'd have preferred 11 ... since I accept Arthur C. Clarke's opinion that Jupiter is not a planet - it's a pre-stellar mass (a small "Sun" waiting to be born).

Mercury and Pluto are smaller than even Titan and Ganymede

Titan is really more a planet than some planets - though it is circling the wrong thing to be considered i guess
