I use TMPGenc DVD Author 2.0. It will let you add a 2nd audio track. There are other authoring programs (like DVDLab Prof) that allow it, but TDA does everything I need to do so I haven't used any of the others.

AFAIK, the DVD spec doesn't allow two audio streams to play at the same time. If you want the background music to run under the narration, you will have to mix the two together in an audio editor first. If oyu author a disc with the music on one track, and the narration on the other, you can play the music, or the narration, not both. When you hear commehntary tracks that fade in and out over the movie audio, they have been mixed this way first.

avi is a different matter. Some players - WMP, for example - will play both tracks by default. You have to install a splitter to allow WMP to tell the difference. Others, like VLC or MPC will allow you to select a track. For avi you can use the Streams function in Virtualdubmod to add extra audio tracks.

Hi thanks for your help I’m sorry that I forgot to give the format of the files the video file is in XviD with AC3 audio the narration audio is also in AC3. I assume that the TMPGenc DVD Author 2.0 won’t help me. I used Virtualdubmod and I got a video with dual audio. I played the video file in virtualdubmod went to streams – video comments where the audio of the original video was present than I added the narration audio file than I selected video direct stream copy and save avi as. I assume this is the correct procedure because I got a file with dual audio correct me if I did something wrong. Because I don’t now mach about this I want to ask you to make sure that the video file I got using virtualdubmod allows when I go to the second track (narration audio) the first track is turned off and there is no mixtures of the two files. Its hard for me to find out by watching and listening to the file because the music is the same in both the original video and in the background of the narration file thanks

Use VLC or MPC to test your new file. Either will allow you to select a single track to listen to. If you want to hear them mixed, just use WMP.

OK - But be aware that dual audio AVI isn't "main stream", and some players (like WMP, as you've discovered) don't handle it as expected. May also cause trouble for some stand alone DVD/AVI players.
