I'll be buying a laptop soon. Which is a better CPU for a laptop..AMD or Centrino, and which brand is best. Nobody mention Celery, please.

I want a 15.4" or 17" display screen, at least 100GB hard drive, and 1 GB RAM. Price should also be around $1200 or less.

    TIA

    I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Core Duo T2400, 2 gb PC5300, ATI Radeon X1300.
I also have an HP with AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 2 gb memory, and ATI Radeon X200 with 128 onboard.
    Both have 15.4 screens

The Inspiron runs rings around the HP and and my brother's HP DV8000Z with AMD Turion ML37. F.E.A.R is fully playable with decent resolutions, HL2 and all "Steam" games run superbly.

The Core Duo shines when using Nero 7's Recode. It cuts the time in half even for a Dell Dimension 8400 with a 3.2 ghz P4.

Some people will have issues with Dell. I have had problems with this and an Inspiron 6000 previously. On the other hand, the family's HPs with AMD processors have run flawlessly. However, once Dell ironed out the problems, the Inspirons have run superbly.

At the end of the day, I reach for the Inspiron over the HP DV5000 for everything. I suppose I should put the HP on eBay.

As a closing thought, I have been a staunch AMD supporter but have no experience directly or indirectly with their dual core mobile processors. If they compare to Intel Core Duo, don't rule them out if they fit in your budget (The Inspiron 6400 / E 1505 does).

I've always gone with Intel for mobile. HOnestly I think they make the better mobile chip.

But then I just went back to Intel for my Desktop also...

and yes Core Duo 1 or 2 both kick ass.

Intel runs cooler and faster on the mobile series. That's been my experience.

Let me pull out my crystal ball and see what is best for you.

*Kicks* crystal ball for not working.

Sorry this thing doesn't appear to be working at the moment. Perhaps you could tell us what you want in the "best" machine. I could tell you which is best for me but of course that might not be what is best for you.

I'm leaning strongly towards HP. As for Dell, I'd only order their XPS line of notebooks, and since I would want at the least a 100 gb hd, and 1 gb ram, the cost is more than I'm willing to pay right now. I'd prefer an Intel chip as well, preferably a dual core.

As for the use....I will be running Photoshop CS2 and AutoCad, both classes I will be taking this fall, so speed is a must. Large drive space is needed as well, since I would be putting video files on the notebook.

Looking to buy in about a month, so prices today may not apply then.

    Any criticism about HP? Toshiba?

Thanks for the input so far.
