I've downloaded a couple of .avi files but as soon as I open them, my browser launches and i get a message directing me to the 3rd party software part of the Quicktime site because I am 'missing some software' and I have no audio at all.
Most of the other files I have work fine with QT and all have sound. Apparently, according to the author of the .avi's it is an issue with DC-3 sound but I'm lost!
Is this because they are set up for PC?

Try playing the files in VLC or mplayer. If you can play the files using either, both apps have ways to get information about the videos, showing which codecs they use. You'll probably have to install the relevant Quicktime components to get Quicktime to play the videos properly.
DC-3 sound? I haven't heard of that... are you sure it isn't AC3?If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Must have been a Freudian slip or maybe a total newbie-ism! Yes, of course you're right - it's AC3!! (AC, DC, who cares, I just want sound!!)
