So I bought this nec nd-3550a dvd writer a few days ago, and I tried to installed it, but then right after the Dell Logo appears, a black screen popped up saying somthing like "Diskette 0 failure." Then on the desktop screen, this bubble popped up. And I checked the Device Manager, it said that the nec nd-3550a drive is not intalled successfully, so it may not work properly. Then I unplugged the dvd writer and replugged it, and reboot my pc. That black screen I mentioned earlier still appeared (like every time I reboot my pc now, I saw that black screen). When I checked the Device Manager, now, it said it's installed successfully. But when I tried to make burn a TY02 (I bought this from Fry's, could it be fake? cuz I heard ppl say that there's fake TY0x), and even a dvdrw, they both failed. I googled it, could it that my Dell Dimension 2400 PC doesn't like it? Is it PC problem? media? writer? So HELP!

I have an ND-3550A, and had a similar problem (Win2000 and WinXP would not install on two different machines using this drive.) Once Windows copied all its files and rebooted to finish installation, the drive was "not found" and I couldn't install. It happened in two machines, one with a SATA hard drive and one with an ordinary IDE.

What firmware version does it have? Mine was 1.05. When I updated it to 1.06, *all* problems went away. I burn genuine TY02 media from supermediastore.com on it just fine.

If you are using 1.05, check NEC's web site, they have a firmware update to bring it up to 1.06.

If that doesn't work, make sure the master/slave jumper is set properly. If that doesn't work, take all other drives off except the 3550A and your boot hard drive, make the 3550A a master on the second IDE chain (whether you use SATA hard disks or IDE on the primary chain) and see if that works.

My problem is finally solved. I think it's the master/slave jumper problem. Before, my secondary slave drive was turned off. So I removed my cd writer from the secondary master drive and replaced it with my dvd writer. And now everything works great. Phew. This had been giving me headaches. Thank you, BruceSD.
