  1. I've been happy with AutoGK, of all the programs I've used I like it's results the best, it's not the fastest, but I like the image. I tried a Few Encodes at 720 using a Quality based encode of 80%. The Image is very close to the original. I will occasionally watch these on my Widescreen Monitor and also a Portable. Would 640 Fixth Width be a better option or is 720 a better option for a resolution close to the original?

  2. It probably depends on your players. Leaving the video at 720x480 (720x576 PAL) will avoid any resizing which always adds (at least a little) artifacts. You would then use the codec's internal PAR setting to specify the display aspect ratio. But not all players respect that setting. Many assume square pixels for Divx/Xvid AVI files.

If your players support the PAR setting and you don't mind relying on that, then 720xwhatever will give slightly better results. My Divx/DVD player doesn't respect the PAR so I use 640xwhatever, square pixel.

  3. for a 4:3 vid setting Auto GK to 720 yields a 720x544 resolution automatically. Tis plays in my Zen M without a problem it seems.
