Hi, yes I meant mpeg4. I have a dvd with mpeg2 vob files and it won't play on my dvd player. I think I need to convert to mpeg4 vob files. Can you help.
Thankyou -
Not really such a thing as MP4 VOB files. VOB files are part of the DVD format and would only be MPEG-2 video. (Or MPEG-1 in a few circumstances) As far as losing quality, of course you will.
Any conversion will lose quality, and one to a highly compressed format like MP4 even more. But you should be able to preserve enough quality for your purposes.
But, to go through the basic steps: You might want to DL VOB2MPG. That will extract the video from the DVD VOBs and give you one huge MPEG-2 file. Then you re-encode that to the format you want. That's the simple answer. You can use Nero if you like for the encoding. Once you have the MPEG file, you can also use other programs, depending on what format of MP4 you are planning on encoding to.
There are other methods, using DVD Decrypter to extract a DVD to a single large VOB. Using VirtualDub Mod to convert each VOB separately, then joining them later. I'm assuming you are starting with a DVD, otherwise, you might need a different method.
Why not check out our guides to the left. 'CONVERT' is where you want to look. Find the conversion and check out the guides. You may also find a VOB to MP4 conversion guide.
And welcome to our forums. You may have a few more questions.
EDIT: I would be surprised if a MP4 would play on your DVD player. There are very few MP4 players around if you are speaking about Nero Digital Video. It's sounding more like you have a problem DVD. If so, you might want to repair the video file, not convert it to MP4. -
Normal Movie DVDs contain MPEG 2 compressed video in .VOB files. Divx/DVD players play MPEG 4 (Divx or Xvid) in .AVI (and sometimes) .MP4 files.
I suspect you want to master a regular movie DVD with your VOB file. Look into DVD mastering applications. -
I am really a novice at this stuff. I think the problem may be as stated " a problem". It is a digitrex GK750. I will try a few options you posted in the next couple of days and let you know how I went.
Thankyou -
Hi there, I converted the files using Nero Recode and then made a new compilation using nero burning rom, I was pretty excited but still it did not work in my dvd player. It is a digitrex GK750. Any clues or tips.
I have also tried dvd shrink, it also did not work.
Thanks -
If Shrink did not make a compliant DVD, then I would suspect your DVD media may not be compatible with your player. That's the easiest thing to change, just try some different brands. You could check our DVD Player page for a similar player as I didn't see that particular model listed. There may be some suggested brands of media. Less frequently, it could be a problem with your burner and the media.
Does the DVD play in the computer with a program like PowerDVD that emulates a settop player? -
Hi Redwudz, the dvd work on the computer through PowerDVD. I suspect the dvd player is a Divx player. Would this play vob files?
Thanks -
I was unable to find any information on the digitrex GK750. I saw that they make several DVD players, some of which can play Divx files. I saw no mention of MP4 files.
Some information you may find useful:
MPEG 4 is a video compression scheme, more sophisticated than MPEG 2 and MPEG 1. There are several MPEG 4 codecs, Divx, Xvid, etc.
MP4 is a container. AVI is a container. Both file types can contain video (and audio) compressed with any codecs. Divx's (the company) software produces AVI files with additional data and renames them .DIVX. There are other containers like OGM, MKV, etc.
Most set-top and portable DVD players that support MPEG 4 compressed video only support it in AVI files.
Nero recode produces MP4 files.
VOB is a special multiplexing of audio, MPEG 1 or MPEG 2 video, and other data used by normal movie DVDs. I've never heard of MPEG 4 video in a VOB file, or a player that can play it. A normal movie DVD has several other files in addition to the VOB file(s), all in a very specific layout. All are necessary for the video to play on a normal DVD player. You use DVD mastering software to create the layout. Software like Ulead DVD MovieFactory, Tmpgenc DVD Author, etc.
If you player supports Divx AVI then you can use something like VirtualDubMPEG2 to produce files suitable for your player. Then burn the files onto ISO Data DVDs. -
Hi Jagabo, thanks for you info, will try in next day or so and post the result.
Cheers mate
