I have been capturing DVB to an mpeg2 file. It aways plays ok but if I try to remove ads, burn it to dvd or change bitrate it damages the audio sync.
I have given up on it now and would like to just convert it to avi and deal with it in premiere.

What avi codec is as close to mpeg2 in size and quality?

also what does GOP & PTS errors stand for? even when these are fixed there are still problems in my mpeg2 captures

Try using MPEG VCR to edit your mpeg, rather than convert to avi. I use it for cutting out commercials and I have never had a sync problem.

  3. Try the free Mpg2Cut2 for simple cut/paste editing.

Answer: MPEG2 -- you can put MPEG2 in AVI files although it's not common. MPEG4 (Divx/Xvid) can provide better picture quality at lower bitrates than MPEG2. H.264 even better.

  4. If your goal is to edit and then Re-encode, Huffy would be a good choice. High compression means loss of accuracy in editing. Get the compression After editing.

GOP and PTS errors very common with captured MPG. Short version is that the sequences expected by various programs are not smoothly continuous. Some programs are better than others at dealing with and/or repairing it. You may need to try several.

The Group of Pictures and P? Time Stamp errors are commonly at the commercial breaks, or any other edited points. Capping closed GOP seems to help.

VideoRedo seems to work well, Cuttermaran, Tmpgenc Merge and Cut also, PVAStrumento for some. Check for a Padding Stream, demuxing and remuxing especially problematic for these files. You may need to hand-pick the prog for each step, also a prog which works for the first Demux may fail at the second.

Another issue is that the Audio playback which is used to determine the error in the first place may well be variable in different playback softwares. Try several, and I mean AT LEAST 3 and preferrably 5. A standalone player seems to be much more tolerant of and able to correct these issues.

I have used VideoRedo for about a year and a half to edit my DVB recordings. If you do get a sync problem it also makes it quite simple to correct this too.
