Hello! I have some old family videos and I was wondering if it's possible to make these look any better. As you can see there's white horizontal lines in the center, (looks like a tracking problem), and then it's hard to notice but as the bottom edge of the video the whole edge is distorted. It seems like at the bottom edge you see some of the video distorted at just the edge. It's only visable when I capture video to the computer and not visible on the TV. I was wondering if it's possible to fix this or if I could use some sort of program to remove like a 6 pixel tall line along the bottom. I'm using a Canopus ADVC-100. Thanks for any help!! -Mark

Note* I know the bottom line problem seems very minor compared to the other stuff, but the bottom line appears in all videos.

It is normal. It is the VCR head switching before the vertical interval.

As davideck suggested, the noise at the bottom of the frame is normal for any VHS source. You don't see it on TV because TVs "overscans". TVs draw the picture larger than the visible part of the display to hide defects like this at the edges of the frame.

You don't want to remove scanlines from the bottom or top of the image. Doing so will lead to interlace problems. Mask them them with black bars intead. Just about every video editing package has "fill" functions for this.

Thanks for the replies! Now I just need to figure out on why Virtualdub isn't capturing video correctly. Premiere and Windows Movie Maker are fine, Virtualdub... nothing... contines to mess around..

VirtualDub needs a Video for Windows capture driver to capture. Most Firewire (DV) devices do not provide a VFW driver, and thus cannot be used by VirtualDub at all.

That was true but isn't anymore. WDM support is now in the main line at least 1.6.4 plus or from 1.6.12 changelog:

* Capture: Capture from DV sources to type-2 DV AVI using the DirectShow DV driver is now supported.
