What kind of movies are you talking about? There are plenty of sites around (youtube, Ifilm) that offer video in a variety of formats.

I am talking about *full lenght* movies that distributed in DVD - all kind, include westerns/adventures/horrors, etc
Not a trailers, not a short films or clips. Most movies offered in DVD(mpeg2), DivX formats, but not the WMV..
There are offered only *short* video films for pocket PC devices in .wmv format, with poor quality..

There are some full length mvoies in WMV-HD format if thats of any interest. Examples include Terminator 2 Extreme Edition.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/dvd.aspx

The disadvantage is that they also come with DRM (Digital Rights Management), hence playback is restricted to PC only with a internet connection.

WMV-HD format is slighty another. Playback restricted to PC only with a internet connection is a serious drawback. Movie assortment is very limited, also.

Seems to me, the OP really only wants WMV because they've "had good luck" with playing them in WMP. Fix for that is to get the correct MPEG2/DivX/etc. filters to use with WMP, so that ALL media files play fine in WMP (and hence, no need to do any converting at all), or to skip WMP and use a better media player (MPC, VLC, BSplayer, or a "DVDplayer" app like PowerDVD or WinDVD).

Why go to all that conversion work headache when you don't have to?

Yes, I played mainly WMV (640x480) on a WMP 9.0 player. I am fully satisfied with WMV quality for the moment. The reason is simple: I just dont want to experiment with various codecs on this PC that has a lot of the workings programs and kept important data, plus PC is weak enough (win98)..

It seems, Media Player Classic supports most formats only if we have appropriate codecs installed like DivX, XviD, AVI, MOV, MPEG1/2, RM.(i.e. it have no this codecs built-in)

Win98. That's most likely the problem.

Get a new box with XP-SP2. It'll have WMV v10 on it. DL codecs for DivX and Xvid. Buy a reg. version of PowerDVD. It'll come with MPEG2 decoding filters--which should work with WMP. Try ffdshow and get an AC3 filter and parser. And DL the latest Flash player. That will pretty much cover all the usual things that you would find on the Net (at least from "legit" sources).
Once done, you'll have a much better user experience.

If you don't want to do this and want to continue with your machine and your search for WMV--GOOD LUCK. You're in for a hard time, because WMV "versions" of std movies usually only come from shady sources.

WMV movies plays not worse than DVD (mpeg2), espescially if bitrate high. Not sure about sources, but this does not matter, main thing is a good quality.

Any recommendations for quality DVD/DivX/Xvid to WMV converter?(movies already ripped on hdd, not on DVD media) Key word is 'quality'..

VLC media Player works with almost every format. It has its own codecs built in so you dont need to install any additional codecs.

Windows Movie Maker is one tool for encoding to wmv. What file types it can read is another matter - but at least mpg.
But unless you do conversion on another box, you must have the codec for the source file installed, to convert it to wmv anyway.

You can rewind like any other player by moving the progress bar at the bottom of the screen/player.

Dont know where you got that information but can you provide a source to backup your claim.

VLC is a multi platform software compatible with win 95/98/ME/2000/NT/XP, Linux, Mac OS X, BeOS, BSD, Solaris, QNX, iPaq, WinCE:

VLC is a cross-platform media player, but may have problem on win98.

    From Videolan website:
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

"Windows 95/98/Me users: Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support.
VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems. The two MSLU files need to be put in the C:\Windows\System32\ folder."

Many Win 98 users noted that have problems with VLC on they system (VLC work, although)

    http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=7026&highlight=windows98

It required put some additional dll's on windows 98 machine.
