Depends on what video stream is in the avi. Are we talking MPEG-4? AVC? DV? For MPEG-4, try MPEG4Modifier. You could also play with say mplayer and see if it resizes.

  3. Well, it's not MPEG-4. I believe it is DV. My goal is to convert it to MPEG-2 and then to DVD.

I got advice from jagabo regarding encoding settings in TMPGEnc Plus:

". . . for a 4:3 720x480 source (like DVD VOB or DV AVI) simply set [the video arrange method] to "Full Screen." For square pixel AVI sources use "Full Screen Keep Aspect Ratio."

I know I have a Pal 720x576 .avi file (non-interlaced) that I want to encode with TMPGEnc Plus into MPEG-2 format. But didn't know what I should set the video arrange method to. Jagabo mentioned .avi if has square pixels. But I don't know how to tell.

Stick with "Full Screen" if your source is DV. This is a file you transferred from your camera, right?

  5. Not from my camera. I got the TV shows from a friend. Probably captured via a video card, I would imagine.

Should be pretty obvious if it is 4:3 or 16:9 just by whether it looks better @ 768x576 or 1024x576.
