I have 2 .avi files that I encoded both with Xvid, with same settings - same resolution, same frame rate, etc. And virtualdub(mod) refuses to combine them. I don't know why. Can anybody help? Here is info on these two files, and error message:

The data rates are different. I know that it would seem that shouldn't matter when using VBR, but in my experience VDub doesn't like it if the average bitrate is different.

Thanks for the input, But how come bitrate (datarate) plays any role in here?.
Suppose you have single .avi (xvid) file, suppose also that frst half- is pretty static, and thus uses, say 1000kbps, and second half is "action-type" and uses 3000kbps. So if you cut up this .avi file in 2 halves - might it be possible that you won't be able to combine them after that?
Anyway, do you have any proposal? I can reencode first part (only 27 seconds), but i wouldn't want to reencode second part.

Like I said, it doesn't seem like it should matter for the reasons you site, but if you were to re-encode one of them (the shorter one) so the reported average bitrate matched the other, VDub would append them with no problem. If you were to split a file as you described then it would depend if the two files reported the same average bitrate (taken from the original file), or if they reported actual average bitrates (making them different). The former would recombine, the latter wouldn't.
