I have an AVI file that I'd like to convert to DVD format so I can watch it on my DVD player. I've been trying for a few days now and so far have run into several problems, all but one of which I have been able to find solutions for by reading through this forum. My current problem is that when I try to play the resulting VIDEO_TS folder in Apple's DVD player application, the video is jerky and the sound is out of sync. I've also tried playing it in VLC, and it played perfectly. When I click the info button in FFMPEGX I get the following information about the file I'm trying to convert.
    Video: [XVID] 624x352 12bpp 23.976 fps 992.5 kbps (121.2 kbyte/s)
    audiocodec: framecopy (format=55 chans=2 rate=48000 bits=0 B/s=16316 sample-0)

The settings I used in my most recent attempt were:
    DVD mpeg2enc
From Video tab: video bitrate = 2994 (Obtained by clicking the 'Best' button), video size = 720x480, Autosize = DVD, Framerate = NTSC Film
    From Audio tab: audio bitrate = 448 kbit/s, Sampling = 48000 Hz, Channels = 5:1, Mode=CBR
From Options tab: Under mpeg2enc options the following boxes are checked: No SVD scan, Letterbox, Decode with mplayer, Set 3:2, Altivec, Bicubic.

My question is, if it doesn't play properly using Apple's DVD application, am I safe in assuming my home DVD player will also be unable to play it properly? If so, what can I do to fix it?

I'm kind of new to this sort of thing. If I've left out any information that would be helpful, please let me know.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I think I got a similar file here, so I could try and replicate your situation.

    VIDEO: [XVID] 624x352 12bpp 23.976 fps 1002.3 kbps (122.4 kbyte/s)
    audiocodec: framecopy (format=55 chans=2 rate=48000 bits=0 B/s=15138 sample-0)

Encoding to DVD mpeg2enc with your settings, I got the same jerky video in Apple DVD Player!
Manually muxing the streams again didn't change anything.
Creating the image with Toast from VIDEO_TS folder didn't change anything.
Re-authoring with Toast (.mpg file as input) DID change something, because now the playback was smooth.

My guess, there's something not exactly right with the ffmpegX mux/author tool for 23.976 fps material, even with pulldown, when it comes to compatibility with Apple DVD Player.

I couldn't verify the set top player, as I don't have a NTSC tv set. Couldn't you savely burn to DVD-RW and try that? If it is not satisfactory, just erase the disc.

I had the same problem with the jerky video. I went back to the previous version and it worked perfectly.

    Here is the thread:

I actually got mine working in a different way. I used decode with Quicktime instead of decode with mplayer. I didn't try this initially because I didn't have the proper plugins installed for Quicktime to be able to play the file. I also ended up manually muxing the streams, but that was only because my system had a kernel panic before ffmpegx had finished, and I wasn't about to go through the whole encode again. I couldn't tell you if muxing separately had anything to do with my results or not.

Anyway, the resulting VIDEO_TS folder played flawlessly in Apple's DVD player, and I have since burned it to a DVD and it has worked fine in the two other players I have tried it in.

Confirmed that decoding with QuickTime versus mplayer makes a difference here. I don't see the connection decoder-authoring, but hopefully major will.

I am kinda new to this as well and I have had the same problem converting .avi and .mp4 to DVD (video_TS). How do I use Quicktime to achieve the same results as those who already contributed here? If its possible to get the idiot-proof walkthrough it would much much appreciated!
